The Clash of Culture and Genetics

DNA research, and the inexpensive access to DNA tests, can be a sobering discovery to many. When everything you thought about yourself, your family, and your culture is appropriated and not factual, people can react with denial or with a new sense of discovery.

When I had my own DNA tested, and then my mother's, I was shocked to find that we are of 100% Northern European descent, with a very rare mitochondrial haplogroup. My mother told me we are Jewish on the maternal side; we are not, although she still stands by that. My maternal grandmother told me that we have Native American on the fairly recent maternal side, but as a genealogist I've been unable to find it (admixtures in the past few hundred years won't show up on the deep DNA tests, I'm told). So, what is TRUE when  DNA, familial stories passed down through the generations, intermarriage between different groups, and the culture we practice and pass down to our kids is thrown in the same pot and stirred?

A mystery! That's what!

Razib discusses this on his blog Gene Expression.

"There is also a general insight. How can a people “forget” their past origins? How can they create entirely fictive genealogies? As economists would say: incentives matter. Many human populations emerge through a process of genetic amalgamation, but cultural identity is not governed by the laws of segregation. Cultural identity and memory can rupture and shift far more rapidly because the laws of cultural inheritance are more plastic and protean. There was a clear folk migration of massive numbers of Germans into what became England, but their history and folkways were adopted wholesale by the native peoples whom they conquered. This sort of process likely has occurred many times across human history."

And from the comments, poster AG adds:

"I was indoctrinated by my family as pure blood Northern Han who are proud of people as origin of Han culture. I believe the family tale without any doubt until modern ancestry genetic analysis comes. DNA analysis indicates my 90% mongol ancestry.
When I studied the hometown village history, it all made sense now. The very village was established right after fall of Mongol Yuan dynasty. Many Mongol soldiers served under Ming (Han) emperor were settled in the region and converted into farmers as Han people. Mongol names and intermarriage were forbidden under Ming laws.
Mongols are not very ethnic centritric in the first place. We are happily embracing inter-ethnic marriage and new ethnic identity."

An American Treasure: Douglas Dillard

Douglas Dillard's style of banjo picking is unique. He was born in Missouri, not too far from where I live, was a founding member of the Ozark Mountain Boys, and also played for the Dixie Ramblers. You've probably heard Doug and his band play on the Andy Griffith Show; the jam sessions were a huge hit with fans. Doug died in Nashville in 2012, but will long be remembered for his music.

The Origin of the Ashkenazi Jews

Interesting reading and links from Razib:
"Roughly the Ashkenazi Jews are a half and half mix of a Middle Eastern population and various European groups. The majority of the European ancestry is “Southern European,” probably something like Italian. But, a minority of the European ancestry is like “Eastern European.” Additionally, the former admixture pre-dated the bottleneck, and probably dates to ~1000 A.D., while the latter event post-dates the bottleneck."

*snip*

And from the comment section, Dx states:
"As to the 2nd wave, there is a curious onomastic tidbit. While traditional Ashkenazi male given names are a mix of Hebrew, German, and Romance etymologies, the female given names have an additional, and historically widespread, layer of etymologically Slavic names. The traditional given names are after a deceased ancestor, and thus show remarkable (albeit by no means perfect) persistence over time. The thing about these etymologically Slavic feminine given names is that they come from Old Czech, and are already attested in the old Prague records. It could be interpreted as a hint that Prague, hypothesized to be the earliest post-bottleneck population center, is also where the elements of the sex-biased admixture took place. Alas, no ancient DNA…"

Speech By Viktor Orban

You won't see this speech by the Hungarian Prime Minister on CNN.

Thanks very much, but we don't want Soros either. He can "go back" to the Hell that spawned him.

A Call to Action

Are we cowards, or are we men? It's time folks.

Sell your cloak, buy a sword:

It is not time to break the law, yet. But it is time to start marches, riots, and other forms of relentless civil disobedience to show the establishment our resolve.
If we have the resolve. Do we?
Do you?
The lamps are going out all over the world. It is time to start a few fires.

NOT GUILTY

"A federal jury on Thursday found Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan Bundy and five co-defendants not guilty of conspiring to prevent federal employees from doing their jobs through intimidation, threat or force during the 41-day occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
The Bundy brothers and occupiers Jeff Banta and David Fry also were found not guilty of having guns in a federal facility. Kenneth Medenbach was found not guilty of stealing government property, and a hung jury was declared on Ryan Bundy's charge of theft of FBI surveillance cameras."

But they're still in jail, and LaVoy Finicum is still 6 feet under. Is a murder trial in the wings for the SOBs that shot him in cold blood?

Also, compare the original article to the "updated" article. It's no wonder Americans loathe the press. And the feds. (Did you read where federal officers tackled and tasered one of the defense attorneys?)

Controlling The Narrative

Have you all been following the awful rape of a special needs little girl in Idaho? There's more:
The following is a news release issued late Friday from the office of United States Attorney Wendy J. Olson.
“BOISE – The United States Attorney’s Office extends its support to the five-year-old victim of assault, and her family, at the Fawnbrook Apartments in Twin Falls.
“The United States Attorney’s Office further encourages community members in Twin Falls and throughout Idaho to remain calm and supportive, to pay close attention to the facts that have been released by law enforcement and the prosecuting attorney, and to avoid spreading false rumors and inaccuracies.
“Grant Loebs is an experienced prosecutor, and Chief Craig Kingsbury is an experienced law enforcement officer. They are moving fairly and thoughtfully in this case,” said Wendy J. Olson, U.S. Attorney for Idaho. “As Mr. Loebs and Chief Kingsbury informed the public, the subjects in this case are juveniles, ages 14, 10 and 7. The criminal justice system, whether at the state or federal level, requires that juveniles be afforded a specific process with significant restrictions on the information that can be released. The fact that the subjects are juveniles in no way lessens the harm to or impact on the victim and her family.”
Olson continued, saying:
“The spread of false information or inflammatory or threatening statements about the perpetrators or the crime itself reduces public safety and may violate federal law. We have seen time and again that the spread of falsehoods about refugees divides our communities. I urge all citizens and residents to allow Mr. Loebs and Chief Kingsbury and their teams to do their jobs.”
As one of 93 U.S. attorneys, Olson represents the federal government in all civil and criminal cases within her state.
Olson was appointed to her post in 2010 by President Obama and has a history of taking strong stands against “anti-Muslim bias.”

The Mind Of The Left

Here's a good article I thought you all might enjoy reading and pondering.  A snippet:
"Economics are not usually considered part of a culture, but for red-diaper leftists, their attitude to economics is cultural. It is part of the core, sacred narrative. They usually have a child-like view of economics, which they often have inherited from their parents. This is probably why the doubt triggered by their first tax shock is so easily forgotten for leftists. The child-like view is comfortable and familiar. Once amnesia sets in and comfort returns, discussions of economic reality are seen as right-wing propaganda.
Leftists hear big numbers and picture Scrooge McDuck’s money bin, not infrastructure, maintenance, specialized equipment, transportation, training, payrolls, etc.
For leftists, industry has so much money. Businesses make huge profits. The price of everything is too high. The government has billions. They want to keep it all for themselves and their rich friends. So leftists believe that these evil people must be made to spend the money on things the leftists themselves choose."

Thanks to Vox Day for the great find.   A slice of his thoughts on the article:
"It's an interesting glimpse into what, for me, is an entirely alien mindset. I find it easier to understand those from very foreign cultures, including the English, the Italians, and even the Japanese, than I do a left-wing 2.0 American. While I correctly noted their fixation on narratives and the childish nature of their magical thinking, I was always mystified by their delusions of intellectual brilliance.

I put it down to their education and credential fetishes, but the author makes clear their belief in their intelligence is actually due to the fact that they are so deluded, they believe they are actually producing the solution to all the various problems they encounter by virtue of repeating their magic mantra: more government spending.

Of course, their concept of government is childish too; it is essentially a magic combination of a 365-day Santa Claus with a friendly Sunday School god whose got the whole world in his hands."

Character and Class

Ben Carson didn't hear his name called at the debate and was left hanging in the entryway. The other candidates walked right past him. Not Trump. He immediately sized up the situation and responded in the classiest way possible. He stood with Dr. Carson. Then he delayed his own entrance so Dr. Carson could accept the crowd applause.

Well done sir. VERY well done.

Shut Up, K O’Donnells Explained

This is wild. A Breitbart Meetup turned into a special ops for the police departments of two Arizona cities. Make sure you watch the video; what a rowdy, dangerous bunch of extremists!

When I think of all the left wing, socialist, communist, social justice, global warming idiocy we've all been forced to endure in classrooms, restaurants, meetings, bars, etc,, this little meetup seems rather tame. I love the attendees for their sense of humor; it IS pretty ridiculous. I hope the two police departments bill the manager of K O'Donnells for the cost of the chopper. Heh.

Mass Immigration

Here is an insightful article that Derb penned about immigration in the United States.
"Population of the British Isles, Britain and Ireland, in 1921: 47.3 million. Population of Mexico in 1921: 13.9 million. So there were only thirty percent as many Mexicans as Brits back then.
Population of the British Isles today: 68.6 million. Population of Mexico: 120.3 million. So today there are 75 percent more Mexicans than Brits. If you throw in the thirty or forty million people of Mexican origin in the U.S.A., it’s over twice as many. There are people alive today who have seen the ratio of Mexicans to Brits go from thirty percent to two hundred percent."

I once was a big supporter of immigration, but that was before I was aware of how crazy it has all gotten. I do not support American citizens financing everything from food stamps to housing to medical care for immigrants. My dad's side of the family are recent immigrants to the US from England, Germany, Sweden, and Norway (late 1800s). Back then, immigrants had to have a sponsor that would guarantee the newcomers wouldn't end up as a burden to society. They acculturated, learned to speak English, and worked their fingers to the bone to make a life in their new country. But they were Christians, and had that in common with the majority of their new Judeo/Christian countrymen. I think this is a huge factor to successful integration, but it's certainly not the only factor.

But we're lucky here, so far. In Germany and other parts of Europe, there is a free-for-all. Muslim immigrants have inundated Germany, demanding ever more handouts from working people. Why Merkel has capitulated to the angry hordes of Allah is beyond me. From here, it looks like national suicide. Nothing good will come of this when fed up Germans stand up to reclaim their land, their culture, and their hard-earned euros.

Here's more interesting reading at VD's place. Do you all think it will come down to a religious war, Christians vs Muslims? Or is it more likely to be Muslims vs. everyone who isn't? We can hope that sanity will prevail and those immigrants who can't acculturate will be shipped home to whatever sh*thole they came from, but I doubt it.

Erase the SPLC

The foot-stamping little trolls of the SPLC, a pillar of today's elite class, are championing a cultural pogrom against the eviiiiil racist haters raters hatists of the South. The Backlash Will Be Fierce

I'm sure you have all been following the ridiculous meltdown over the confederate battle flag, the proposed mutilation of the General Lee (merdi!), and the call to ban Gone With The Wind. Vox Day and his merry band of minions are (and have been) fighting the SJW idiots with a scorched-earth vengeance.
This is insane. Now even Gone With the Wind is under attack. After all, how can Amazon possibly sell a book and movie that shamelessly glorifies the Confederacy? And what about The Dukes of Hazzard? I mean, the car is even named the General Lee!

One thing is clear. We now know what Round Two's banner is going to be. All the SJWs have succeeded in doing is heating up the cultural war while taking one of the more potent historical symbols of the past and making it relevant to tomorrow's rebels.

And this, of course, is why it is ALWAYS a huge mistake to give an SJW so much as a single inch.

"Tearing Down the Confederate Flag Is Just a Start"
- Nicolas Kristof, The New York Times

I expect it probably is a start of something. But not necessarily the start of what he thinks it is.

Now, I have never flown a confederate battle flag, and have never displayed a picture of Jeff Davis in my living room. Like many Americans, my ancestors fought and died on both sides of that gawd-awful conflict. However, I'll be damned if some boot-licking reprehensible toady is going to tell me what I (or my state) can run up the flagpole. DO NOT tread on me. DO NOT DO IT. That is all.

Hah!

Coming Soon...

Trip to Israel, how I fractured my elbow, the Israeli health care system, things you never knew about Annie (hint: she lives in Israel!)

The whole of Israel is kosher (who knew?)

Everything closes on Shabbat, even the elevators.

Wine is cheaper than water in Israel (seems fitting somehow, no?)

Friday Night Funny

For those of you who haven't seen this yet...it. is. hilarious.  Seems that the UK has been gripped by a (horrible) trend whereby pubs, caffs, bistros, rest au rantes, coffee shops, etcetera, go out of their way to serve all manner of food and drink on/in something other than plates, glasses and cups.  Witness here the joy of being served your steak and melted garlic butter on a well used (and knife marked) flat wooden board.  Or your full English breakfast on a shovel!  A fruit shake in a light bulb and butter on a rock.  Witness too the ingenuity of food served on construction debris and pieces of clothing. And sometimes just on the table top itself. Too hilarious (and frightening) for words.

Enjoy!  Oh, and Bon Appetite!
