A Samizdata Quote of the Day

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
Never a truer word.  Related.

Haiti IS a Shithole

So, while the media is having an apoplectic fit over the "Haiti is a shithole" comment *allegedly* said by President Trump, I'm thinking two things:

1. Look at what his other hand is doing, and
2. Haiti? Did he just lob a grenade into the Clinton swamp? I think he did!

The Anger Isn't Abating. It's Building.

From contributor Sundance at The Conservative Tree House:
"...Perhaps it would be different if you ever had a come-to-Jesus moment and apologized immediately following the November election.  Then again, when your opinion of your own self-importance is this high, those humble words are just as foreign as your understanding of the movement that won.

You don’t get to frame the entire construct of your argument around opposition to a team, and then claim benefit to the outcome of victory.  Stay on your high-horse, move along and ride off into that proverbial land of irrelevance; you’re dead here.

Save your dismount for another defining “conservative” assembly where you can gather at CPAC again and give a standing ovation to House Speaker Paul Ryan a month after he eliminates the debt ceiling and passes a $2 trillion OmniBus spending bill, funding all of the progressive priorities you hypocritically claim to oppose; you’re good at that.

That particular circle of crazy just doesn’t sell here any longer..."

Read the whole thing. It's brutal. I'm VERY thankful that so many conservatives who didn't like Trump are now with us. We are strong and united! However, these guys (and gals) will NEVER be with us, even as they watch their credibility and their careers circle the drain. We're much better off without them.

This is a fantastic speech. Absolutely fantastic.  Even if you despise Trump, I hope you'll take 41 minutes to listen to this.

Kanye West Is A F*cking Retard

Here's a giant snifter of sanity in a crazy world. Thank you Gavin McInnes.
"We are so cloaked in guilt we can’t see the fool lampooning our fear. I don’t get it. Kanye West is a fucking retard, and as a true egalitarian I enjoy making fun of him. If you were truly nonracist, you would too."

Ben Carson Is Raking In The Moola

I know he'll never get the nomination, and so does everyone else. Like Trump's supporters, those of us championing Carson (and sending him wads of cash) are attempting to make a point to the utterly disconnected RNC; we don't want your candidate (Jeb), we don't want your agenda, and you do not speak for us. Oh, and we've freakin' HAD IT with every tiny little thing being viewed through the prism of race and/or sexual orientation.
Ruger was more blunt. “For the last seven years or so, the liberal media has been accusing the Republican Party of being racist towards Obama, and I think what you’re seeing now is that the Republican Party is not racist, because Carson’s polls are going up,” he said. “Obviously in New Hampshire here, the majority of the people are white—all of them pretty much, if you know what I mean. And he’s not racist and we’re not racist as Republicans.”
His wife, Diane Ruger, a 66-year-old retired radiological technologist, agreed. “We need a unifier, we don’t need a divider,” she said.
So I say: Go Ben! Focus the spotlight on the corrupt, creaky old ostriches in Washington all you can before the shrieking harlots of the "media" eviscerate you and your family.

Deep Thoughts

Whether I agree with Gavin McInnes or not is beside the point. His candor is like a breath of fresh air. He is a man who is not afraid to "tell it like it is" and stare you in the eyes when he's doing it. Breathe deeply.

The basic tenets of the liberal narrative include: Women are thriving in the workforce since being freed from the prison sentence that is the housewife’s life. Southerners are stupid, racist rednecks who are proud of slavery. Undocumented workers are hardworking people who love their families and are just coming here for a better life. Islam is a religion of peace; the extremists are only acting like that because we made them that way. Gender is a construct. Gays are madly in love and can’t wait to devote themselves to the bliss of matrimony. Blacks are struggling a little, yes, but that’s because “systemic” racism is “alive and well” today and cops are out to get them. The only problem with America these days is white men.

It’s a weird narrative that seems to come more from bratty spitefulness than from any kind of rational long-term plan. I think all these ideas may have started in the right place, but after achieving their goal of true equality they just kept steamrolling over us into the sunset. If you call bullshit on them, you’re a bigot or a racist or a sexist. All right, fine. If using my eyeballs and ear holes is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
I also appreciate the kind (and true) words on Southerners.

Finally. Someone Said It.

Namely, Gavin McInnes. His latest article "A Tailgate Under The Hanging Tree" discusses the simple truth; we have no idea what's going on in the world.

“Da news!” yells a 70-year-old man at the bar around the corner from my office. Then he harrumphs and adds, “Yeah, I LOVE watching da news.” His friend the bartender nods in agreement and replies, “Fuck da fuckin’ news. I like cartoons.” Jon Stewart would pause it here and put his head in his hands so all the upper-middle-class liberals could laugh at these uninformed plebes, but I wasn’t laughing. They’re right. The news is worse than a cartoon and it has less and less to do with informing people. It’s become a strange combination of sports and fashion where you follow trends and root for your team.
Read the whole thing. It's brutal.

Tell us how you really feel, guys.

I like watching Trifecta on PJTV. Scott Ott, Stephen Green, and Bill Whittle are fun to watch and usually construct some great arguments for their positions. But I don't know, they seem to be a little ambiguous when discussing the subject of "income inequality."

Mother Knows Best

A poignant, pragmatic letter written to Margaret Mitchell by her mother the day before she died at the age of 47.  Margaret herself was only 48 when she died.   Full context at the always wonderful Letters of Note.

January 23, 1919

Dear Margaret,

I have been thinking of you all day long. Yesterday you received a letter saying I am sick. I expect your father drew the situation with a strong hand and dark colors and I hope I am not as sick as he thought. I have pneumonia in one lung and were it not for flu complications, I would have had more than a fair chance of recovery. But Mrs. Riley had pneumonia in both lungs and is now well and strong. We shall hope for the best but remember, dear, that if I go now it is the best time for me to go.

I should have liked a few more years of life, but if I had had those it may have been that I should have lived too long. Waste no sympathy on me. However little it seems to you I got out of life, I have held in my hands all that the world can give. I have had a happy childhood and married the man I wanted. I had children who loved me, as I have loved them. I have been able to give what will put them on the high road to mental, moral, and perhaps financial success, were I going to give them nothing else.

I expect to see you again, but if I do not I must warn you of one mistake a woman of your temperament might fall into. Give of yourself with both hands and overflowing heart, but give only the excess after you have lived your own life. This is badly put. What I mean is that your life and energies belong first to yourself, your husband and your children. Anything left over after you have served these, give and give generously, but be sure there is no stinting of attention at home. Your father loves you dearly, but do not let the thought of being with him keep you from marrying if you wish to do so. He has lived his life; live yours as best you can. Both of my children have loved me so much that there is no need to dwell on it. You have done all you can for me and have given me the greatest love that children can give to parents. Care for your father when he is old, as I cared for my mother. But never let his or anyone else's life interfere with your real life. Goodbye, darling, and if you see me no more then it may be best that you remember me as I was in New York.

Your Loving Mother

What Are We Eating?

Have you been reading about horse meat entering the food chain in Europe?

How about a toxic dose of horse medications to go with that spaghetti?  While many people are saying "ew" simply because they have an aversion to tucking into Black Beauty, they should be worried about what drugs are contained within the meat.

Horse meat has now been detected in Swedish meatballs packaged by Ikea. Who knew that Ikea was into food manufacturing? Another mystery solved:  the sawdusty-taste of store bought, processed meatballs.

While horses have not been physically slaughtered here in the US for the past five years, they are transported to Canada and Mexico for that very reason.

"In 2011, about 140,000 American horses were eaten abroad. But they weren’t slaughtered in the U.S. When America closed its last horse slaughter plants five years ago, American horse buyers turned their trucks north and south to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. From there, most of the meat goes to the European Union.
But American horses are given drugs that humans should not consume."

I wonder how much of this meat is finding its way into the American and Canadian food supply, and for how long?

Larry Correia On Gun Control

Good morning friends! I've stumbled across an outstanding essay about gun control in America, and I'd like to share it with you. You might want to pour yourself a big cup of coffee, or brew a cuppa tea...it's long.

I didn’t want to post about this, because frankly, it is exhausting. I’ve been having this exact same argument for my entire adult life. It is not an exaggeration when I say that I know pretty much exactly every single thing an anti-gun person can say. I’ve heard it over and over, the same old tired stuff, trotted out every single time there is a tragedy on the news that can be milked. Yet, I got sucked in, and I’ve spent the last few days arguing with people who either mean well but are uninformed about gun laws and how guns actually work (who I don’t mind at all), or the willfully ignorant (who I do mind), or the obnoxiously stupid who are completely incapable of any critical thinking deeper than a Facebook meme (them, I can’t stand).
Regardless of which side of the debate you're on, this guy's post is jam-packed with information.
