Junior High Students Honor Vets

Here's a glimpse of life from the Heartland.

Students who have classes with Zorman understand his deep patriotism and appreciate the intensity he brings to the classroom.

"I see how much he loves the country and how enthusiastic and respectful he is, and I want to be like that," said Heather Pyszka who was one of the readers for the program.

"He was in the Marines for 21 years and you can tell he's really patriotic. He's a great teacher, he makes learning fun," said ROTC cadet Zachary Farmer, who was in charge of the flag detail.

Putting together as many patriotic learning opportunities for students and honoring veterans and their history so thoroughly is a significant amount of extra work for a history teacher with a full schedule. Some would wonder why Zorman does it.

When asked that question, there was a long pause as Zorman composed himself and collected his thoughts. His answer came in a voice crackling with emotion and the pain of loss.

"I remember all of the veterans. I remember all of the ones that have fallen. I remember all their names. I can still see their faces," Zorman said.

A Response on My Election Analysis

In the comments to my remarks on a forming White racial conciousness and the slow, but accelerating transformation, of what is now a pretty useless semi-conservative Republican Party into what its enemies have always said it is, i.e. the White People’s Party, many have raised objections to not seeing race as a factor in this election.

First, so that there is no misunderstanding on this point, let me add as a footnote to my observations that I started out my political life a true believer in the “classic” civil rights position of a color blind society in which government takes notice that one is an American (or not) and no further. However, it has been my experience that this is, in fact, not the case. That the government does, in fact, take race into account on many different levels, from the local police force ordered to allow a riot that ends up with the beating death of a White teenage (Seattle Police), to finding ways around anti-affirmative action laws in college admissions (University of California), to California Assemblymen who refuse to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner, yet leap to attention and salute during the Mexican national hymn (you can find this on You Tube easily).

Looking at the Election From Afar

I apologize for my absence but it has been Big Important United Nations Meetings season here in Vienna and your humble correspondent has been kept running ragged by a mob of Special Rapporteurs, Deputy Assistant Secretaries of State and Ambassadors-at-Large for Very Heartwarming Causes.

However, I pause in my ceaseless labor for the cause of world peace and the establishment on the international level of a version of the Reed College Office for Multiculturalism and Diversity, at the event of yet another American election. Random observations, from afar:

-- As a native Californian, I warmly welcome Governor Jerry Brown back to the governor’s chair. While I agree with Moonbeam on exactly nothing, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that he, unlike the hopeless RINO hack he was running against, is not in it to advance his career or be the man in the spotlight. In his own way, he loves California and cares about it, something he inherited from his father, and in any case it was Democrats who ran the state into the ground, so it’s only right that Democrats be on the hot seat to clean up the mess. In any case, I wasn’t going to get a governor who was to adopt Arizona-style sense against the on-going invasion, so I may as well get someone and something that is at least recognizably Californian. Plus, to my delight, the Dead Kennedy’s immortal “California Uber Alles” is now current and contemporary once more.

Founded in March, the Las Vegas-based Righthaven has begun buying out the copyrights to newspaper content of the Las Vegas Review-Journal for the sole purpose of suing blogs and websites that re-post, or even excerpt, those articles without permission. The company has settled about 60 of 160 cases for a few thousand dollars each, and plans to expand its operations to other newspapers across the country.

In fact I would be wary of posting Las Vegas excerpts of any kind without being fairly certain of the provenance.

There's Hope!

Fay came back from England today. Since her flight came in at 4:00 PM, I figured I would miss the most of the trick-or-treat rush so I did not get very much candy. It turns out that we had more kids tonight, after 6 o'clock, than we had in previous years.

Needless to say I ran out of candy. As I gave the last piece of candy to a little girl dressed up as a vampireress, I said, "This is my last piece of candy." At the same time, two other kids came up to the door.

This girl turned and gave the piece of candy I had given her to the next kid, a little boy of about 4. Then she dug into her bag and gave the next kid a piece of candy from her stash.

I thanked her profusely. It certainly made my night.
