Testers wanted for "images in comments" feature!

OK folks,

Over at my (hack test) blog, I made a test post where you can post images - follow the (simple!) instructions and have at it!

I'd like to get some feedback before I hack up our "production" blog.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I believe I fixed the IE bug. Confirm?

UPDATE2: OK, looks like IE works - should I go ahead and implement on TCKT as is?

  1. Oh, and there's an R-rated version for those so inclined... ;)

  2. I should add this: many thanks to lady red, who found a link to a post by a blogger-hacker that gave me the idea for how to do this.

I was pretty stumped and figured it was impossible to get blogger to store image links...

    ...and it is, kinda...

The trick is to use a kind of "seekrit coad" to hide the image link info in the blogger database, and use javascript to "decode" the image link and insert it in the HTML every time the page is loaded.

If this general technique works OK for us, it should be possible to add emoticons, etc... and automatically transform 8) and ;) into emoticons, etc...

...but one step at a time, k? thx!

  4. Lewy is a genius! Go to his test blog, and check it out! This will be so much fun to have images and emoticons in our comments!

Thank you Lewy. Smooch smooch smooch smooch smooch...

I didn't go to the X-rated version. I'll leave that to the menfolk, because I just KNOW it won't contain a nekkid pic of Lenny. :)

  5. You are veddy kind lady red... I'll be around again a bit later today... but it looks like at least one user got the hang of it! Cool.

Load the thread(s) up guys - I want to see the javascript stressed in the browser...

  7. This does not work on IE. I had to open Safari to check out the R rated images. For research purposes only, of course.

  8. Dammit, doesn't work for me either (IE).

  12. I've been going crazy over at the test blog. Hahahaha!

I wonder why it doesn't work on IE?

  15. Thanks everyone for the testing. I gathered this much:

    - IE doesn't work. :( florrie's picture post worked fine, but I assume she can't see it.

    - the syntax is pretty unforgiving: case sensitive, no spaces, etc... but when people get the hang of it, it doesn't seem so hard. I can see adding a button eventually.

I have no access to a machine with IE right now, unfortunately. But I will poke around.

IE folks - what do you see instead of the image?

  16. IE folks - what do you see instead of the image?

Only the text, i.e.... imgw: 'url'.

  17. Luther - thanks. I was hoping that was it.

I'm feeling like I can figure it out and work around it - if only I had a Windows machine!

Mrs. Lewy has one but she's using it all the time. Maybe this evening...

  18. Is there anyway I could test it for you? Hell, I'd even give you control of my machine for a while if it would help. I know I'm not the only one using IE.

  19. Luther, thanks for the offer - go try again with IE - I made one change which _might_ work, but at this point it's a hail mary kinda thing trying to debug like that.

I will get a hold of a Windows machine sometime in the next day or two for sure.

Like I said I'm _reasonably_ confident I can work this out...

  20. Lewy, you're doing a great job. I hope you know how much we all appreciate your efforts!

  21. Yes, thanks for all your work, lewy - you the man!

  22. Florrie, scroll upthread to ~KCs~ comment. ^^^^

  23. lady red - heh - do I need to start an R-rated "grrls only" test thread on my blog? I'd be perfectly OK with that...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lewy, I think ~KC~ has it covered (or uncovered, as the case may be). ;)))

    But if you insist...

  25. dangit - there appears to be something which is delaying the "Recent Comments" posts... it isn't the javascript, it's the Atom feed - the feed isn't updating instantly like it used to! It's been sporadic this afternoon - it may be a blogger maintenance thing, or maybe not - we'll see.

Sigh. Maybe time to take another look at the hosting site thing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. OK, now it's working again.

If anyone runs into this again, be aware that the delays may be sporadic and transient.

  27. "a Fat Arsed Canadien Houswife"

    ...lol!

Good thing I know you, and that phrase, as well as I do, otherwise you'd be dog meat ari.

  28. Thank you Lewy for everything. I too have had some problems with the recent comments not showing but Matt hasn't. I'm using Firefox and Matt's using IE!

  29. Sorrry, Lewy... but still no go with IE.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Okay ladies, I've posted a number of feasts for your eyes at Lewy's grrrl thread. Check it out and add your own!

  31. Luther! Florrie! Try again - IE is working for moi at this point.

I found the bug - it wasn't anything to do with the code I added - I'd forgotten that I'd never backfilled my test blog with the very last IE bugfix I had for the "Recent Comments" feature - so "Recent Comments" code was throwing an error which prevented the new image insertion code from running at all!

So we may be good to go now...

  32. "IE is working for moi at this point."

Working for me now as well over at 'Bourbon with Attitude'. Fantastic fix, Lewy. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

  33. I tried in IE and I could see the images but it wouldn't post an image I uploaded...

    ReplyDelete
  34. It works great on your test link - thanks, lewy!

  35. So when do we get this image thingee here?

  36. Not yet I see. Git to steppin there Lewy!! :-P

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey, Ari. I left you a photo on the 'R' test page over there. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sure, Lewy. Are at least I can't think of a reason not to implement.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry all - I've only had a few moments here and there today - I want to make the change while I can be around for a bit in case I mess things up. I should get to it this (west coast) evening...
