The Country Formerly Known As Great Britain

Peter Hitchens throws political correctness out the window and takes a blistering, raw look at the violence in Britain in a rant worthy of a standing ovation. Says he:

As the polluted flood (it is not a tide; it will not go back down again) of spite, greed and violence washes on to their very doorsteps, well-off and influential Left-wingers at last meet the filthy thing they have created, and which they ignored when it did not affect them personally.

No doubt they will find ways to save themselves. But they will not save the country. Because even now they will not admit that all their ideas are wrong, and that the policies of the past 50 years – the policies they love – have been a terrible mistake. I have heard them in the past few days clinging to their old excuses of non-existent ‘poverty’ and ‘exclusion’.

He then goes on to grab the Prime Minister by the back of his powdered neck and thrust him into the spotlight, ruthlessly excoriating Cameron's response to the mayhem.

Water cannon and plastic bullets indeed. What an utter admission of failure, that after 50 years of the most lavish welfare state in the solar system, you cannot govern your country without soaking the citizenry in cold water and bombarding them with missiles from a safe distance. Except, of course, that it is because of the welfare system that this is so.

This Is No Ordinary Love

The violent anarchy that has taken hold of British cities is the all-too-predictable outcome of a three-decade liberal experiment which tore up virtually every basic social value.

The married two-parent family, educational meritocracy, punishment of criminals, national identity, enforcement of the drugs laws and many more fundamental conventions were all smashed by a liberal intelligentsia hell-bent on a revolutionary transformation of society.

Those of us who warned over the years that they were playing with fire were sneered at and smeared as Right-wing nutters who wanted to turn the clock back to some mythical golden age.

What has been fuelling all this is not poverty, as has so predictably been claimed, but moral collapse. What we have been experiencing is a complete breakdown of civilised behaviour among children and young people straight out of William Golding’s seminal novel about childhood savagery, Lord Of The Flies.

And just in case anyone doubts Ms Phillips premise that poverty is not to blame:

Millionaire's daughter Laura Johnson, 19, was charged with stealing £5,000-worth of electronic goods, including a Toshiba TV, Goodmans TV, microwave and mobile phones. The goods were allegedly found in a car being driven by Miss Johnson after a branch of Comet in Charlton, south-east London, was raided. Bexleyheath magistrates heard that a 'public order kit' of balaclava, gloves and a bandana was also found in the car.

Miss Johnson attended St Olave's Grammar School in Orpington, Kent, the fourth best performing state school in the country, after transferring from its sister school Newstead Wood. She achieved A*s in French, English literature, classical civilisation and geography A-levels, and is now studying English and Italian at Exeter University.

Her parents, Robert and Lindsay Johnson, live in a large detached farmhouse in Orpington. It has extensive grounds and a tennis court. They sold their previous house, near Greenwich, for £930,000 in 2006. Miss Johnson's parents, who supported her in court, run Avongate, a direct marketing company. Her father is a businessman with directorships in several companies. He was a director in a company that took over the Daily Sport and Sunday Sport newspapers in 2007.

During her schooling, Miss Johnson offered her services as a tutor. On a website she wrote: 'I was a student at Newstead Wood School for girls and gained four A*s and nine A grades at GCSE.'

Miss Johnson indicated a plea of not guilty to five counts of burglary and was granted bail on condition that she does not associate with the two men allegedly found with her. She must wear an electronic tag, submit to a curfew between 7pm and 6am and not enter any London postcode. She is due to return to court on September 21.

Camberwell Green magistrates heard that a 17-year-old and Alexander Elliot-Joahill, 18, were allegedly passengers in the car. Both were denied bail and will next appear on September 7.

London's Burning

For the third straight night, rioters have burned, looted and pilaged numerous London neighbourhoods. Seeking "justice" for the police shooting of a fine upstanding member of the community crack dealing, violent gang member who was resisting arrest.

As the British police appear not to have been able to stop them and the government hasn't called in the army to disperse the scum, certain communities are taking the law into their own hands and fighting back.

Are They Hardcore Anarchists or Unruly Children?

The Daily Mail estimates that half a million union supporters took to the streets yesterday in central London, protesting proposed budget cuts in jobs and services.  For the most part, the protest seems to have been peaceful, although I have yet to hear how these nurses, firefighters, pensioners, and gov't workers expect to paid when the gov't coffers grow dusty and empty.  To protest without having a viable solution to offer is silly.  "Tax the rich and give it to me!" smacks of ignorance, and isn't a plan so much as it is a mindless rallying cry.

However, wherever there is union activity, you can bet that a handful of self-anointed anarchists are skulking in the shadows, waiting to create chaos.  Just once, I'd love to see the unionists beat the bloody crap out of the anarchists.  Just once!  Can you imagine these young molotov cocktail throwing morons showing up at a Tea Party protest?  Um, that wouldn't work out too well for them.  Nope, it sure wouldn't.

The scumbags made a mess of Trafalgar Square yesterday, as the unionists allowed them to hijack their peaceful protest.  Half a million unionists stood by as THESE idiots trashed the place:

The police had a really bad day.  The Daily Mail calls it "civil disobedience", but around here we call it hooliganism.  These kids would be taken behind the barn by a handful of grown men if they tried to throw furniture through a store window in the Ozarks.  A butt-whoopin' would commence, after which said boys would not be able to sit down for a week.

But that's just how WE roll.  The union organizers here in the States have been trying to create a protest like this one, but so far our union sheep (baaaah!  Truuuuumka!) haven't resorted to standing aside while furniture is tossed around, and our home-grown rabblerousers have been kept in check.  Is it just a matter of time before one of our large cities looks like this?

Not here.  NOT HERE. 

Anarchy In The Streets

Our cousins across the pond are dealing with violent protests after the government voted to raise tuition fees for students.

I know that Britain is having the same budget crunch as we are, but is tripling university tuition a good place to increase revenues?  It seems to me that less young people will be able to afford an education, and that could have ugly consequences down the road.  

However, rioting and throwing bricks through windows is an idiotic response.  Police officers have been badly hurt, and the hoodlums have even attacked Charles and Camilla's car.  This kind of mindless violence will just make the situation worse.
