The furor over the Confederate flag, think I, has little to do with the Confederate flag, which is a pretext, an uninvolved bystander. Rather it is about a seething anger in the United States that we must not mention. It is the anger of people who see everything they are and believe under attack by people they aren’t and do not want to be—their heritage, their religion, their values and way of life all mocked and even made criminal.Read it all. The pot is about to boil over.

Fred Reed Nails It
The backlash over the rebel flag is huge here in the South. Fred explains why:

I've never seen anything like it. And I suspect for every person that is flying the flag on their home and/or vehicle, there are 100, maybe a 1000, more silently saying "hell yeah". And buying ammo.
ReplyDeletePeople are really pissed off. They've had enough. God bless them!
I think you're 100% correct, lady red. People have had enough.
DeleteNikki Haley is a traitor. As is Garth Brooks. Garth has tanked his career. Idiot.

ReplyDeleteOkay, fixed it, thanks to lewy's seekrit codez. I'm deleting the giant one.
DeleteThe left ain't gonna know what hit them. Their base is built upon the takers and usurpers, not on the productive. When the you-know-what hits the fan they are going to have to face a disciplined, capable adversary. They are not going to be given "burn zones."
ReplyDeleteWe are told how the left is fighting for "social justice." Traditionally such revolutions have been fought by people who did the hard work: the farmers, the laborers, etc. Who are the "victims" today? The EBT card users, the projects dwellers, the "Obama Phone" possessors? They are people who would have nothing if it weren't given to them. The sad part is that they feel that they deserve those things.
Saddam's troops in the first Gulf War appeared formidable -- until they faced a dedicated opponent. The left isn't dedicated to anything difficult. Those the left is trying to marginalized are
Hear, hear.
DeleteExcellent comment, Matt. I couldn't agree more.
DeleteI read somewhere that a statue honoring Gen. Robt. E. Lee was spray painted, I believe in Texas. Really? And the point is?
ReplyDeleteThe Union greatly respected Gen. Lee and considered him an honorable man. What's the left trying to do, erase all signs of our Civil War history? How about dealing with the rampant black crime, unemployment, high abortion rate, high black on black murder rate, high drop-out rate? Is that part of the "conversation" the progressives are always blathering on about having?
I think Nicki Haley was right to respond to the calls to remove the confederate flag from the state capital. It should have ended there. Now it's entered the realm of liberal lunacy and the knee-jerk media response.
ReplyDeleteBecause a gesture is never enough. When anyone makes a symbolic gesture, the aggrieved group can be counted to take it much further than anyone intended.
I think the blame lies more with Walmart, Ebay, Amazon, etc. As for Garth Brooks, in the immortal words of Dean Wormer "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
My favorite shot of the Confederate flag...

Obviously this is a racist image which would offend the vast numbers of Critical Studies students who tune into TV Land every day...
Great article, lady red. I sent it to Tom as well, TY for posting it.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, sweet florrie!
DeleteI am no progressive or liberal. I just follow history. The flag removed from government property in South Carolina never ever flew there before 60 odd years ago. The flag in contention is the battle flag of Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Viginia and has no historic connection to SC, or any other state beside Virginia. It became symbolic to many durng the civil rights movement and was erroneously cited as the "Confedate States Flag" when it was never such a thing. I seldom cite Wikipedia, but their bit on the flags of the Confederacy is fairly good. See Here.
ReplyDeleteThis entire kerfuffle over the flag that flew in SC began merely 60 years ago...e.g., a latter day symbol that never was in fact. It's use in the Civil War was in Virginia...and it never flew over the orignal Confederate Capitol in Alabama either. It is a media and film creation more or less as far as its prominence.
In short, other than for those who served in the Army of Northern Virginia, and their descendents, the flag in question today has NO heritage significance vis a vis the Confederate States. If anything it ultimately symbolizes defeat at Appomatox.
Thanks, Aridog, I wasn't aware of any of that. Just makes it all the more ridiculous what is happening now.
DeleteAri, that wiki article is amazing.
DeleteThis is the flag of the South Carolina Confederate Caliphate:
imgw:"http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d170/lewy14/South_Carolina_Sovereignty-Secession_Flag.svg_zpsdhlr2arw.png"
[ Yes I am a goddamned toll. You're welcome! ;) ]
Thanks for your reply aridog, but it's not about the flag. It's about culture, and people (and states) being able to make their own choices. So what if that flag "only" flew for 60 years, or if it's a Virginia battle flag? The fact is that southerners have adopted this particular flag as a symbol of their heritage. That heritage is now under attack. Forcing South Carolina (thanks to Haley's capitulation) to remove the flag is merely a first shot in the coming onslaught. Now they're wanting to dig up confederate generals, rename streets, forbid confederate flags at cemeteries, even deface the awesome memorial at Stone Mountain. It goes on and on. They are ERASING history, and smashing a segment of American culture. This is the same culture that put people like Haley, Tim Scott, and Jindal into office (among many others).
DeleteI despise these SJWs with every fiber of my being. Today they're seeking to destroy southerners. Tomorrow, perhaps they'll target YOUR culture as not fitting into their plans. Dismiss this "kerfuffle" at your own peril my friend.
Lady Red...the issue is not the flag, and any adoption of it as a heritage, other than for Virginai, is just politics of confrontation. The on going nonsense about other monuments is merely the push by idiots, who know little history, the monuments should stand as true heritage, testiments to bravery for their cause as individuals, not some rag in the wind, but not that flipping flag....but it began with the bogus adoption of the flag of Northern Virginia by Hollywood and media types. Lacking that, it would be no issue. Best thing for southerners to do, and the media hacks, is shut up about it...it is a lie that it represented states rights or the Confederacy per se. Lies always beget more lies and obscene nonsense. Southerners didn't adopt that flag, the media did in the late 1950's and it is as simple as that. And thus we have the BS of today on both sides.
DeleteThe "so what" part is iportant...that flag represented nothing until the late 50's, anywhere but Virginia...that fools adopted it thanks to media and Hollywood is the real issue. I've spent considerable time in the south and never saw that flag before the 50's & 60's. Southerners are free to choose their symbols, but it is sad they choose a lie, if that is the case. I am old, and descended directly from participants in the Civil War...and frankly find the issue silly. 600,000+ men died for a whole lot more than that silly rag (whihc never flew but in Virginia)...which ever side one was on at the time, or now. I'll remeber the brave men in uniform, both sides, often brother against grother, and not that rag.
DeleteAri - your argument may be correct on the merits - but history, once re-written, is hard to un-re-write.
DeleteThat flag is what it is, now. See, e.g. Daisy Duke above.
History re-written is still BS, pure unadulterated BS. That flag is perrfect for that bit of fluff on the roof of that car...that is ALL it stands for, period.
DeleteI'm sorry but the most frequent display of that flag in my life has been by Nazis, Aryan Nartions folk, KKK, anarchists, Mountain Church folk, and skinheads, whom I've faced face to face...thus I cannot honor it as anything but a historical artifact of Virginia and NOWHERE else. I feel sorry for those in the south. outside of Virginia, who revere it...they need more time in the library and some history texts. That flag is NOT "what it is now"...it never was, outside of Holllywood and media punks. Last time I checked, when I wore the unform my flag was the 13 stripes with stars in a square blue field...and not that latter day conjured up symbol.
Lady Red ... please forgive me for my obstinace. My time in the south, other than in the early 60's, was delightful and full of the cultural benefits of their way of life. This time, southerners have been "had" by the lunatics who focus on a flag that never flew in most of those states, before 1950 or so, or the casue of "states rights" which most of us endorse. The Civil War was an ugly period and sadly kiled more of our uuth north and south than any war before or since. Those who react to the taunts actually give the lunatics power...better we all left it alone. The media made it a "new" issue again witht their interpretations of the photos of Dylan Roof, whihc I am rather certain do not reflect the opinions of 99% of southerners. However, those photos combined with my personal experiences do ring a bell and that's one bell too many. It is a mere anomoly perhaps that none of the crazy people I refer to are souterners in real life...but I suspect their problems are internal and have no relevance to the sdouthern USA, where some of the finest soldiers I ever served with were born and raised.
DeleteDang: "uuth" = "youth"
DeleteThat flag is perrfect for that bit of fluff on the roof of that car...that is ALL it stands for, period.
DeleteBut you see, Ari, that's precisely the point.
Dukes of Hazard has been pulled from TV Land. The toy flags have been pulled from Wall Mart. Everything with that damned flag is now "unmerchandise", to coin an Orwellian phrase.
The real history is not the point of the exercise. The fake history is not the point of the exercise. Hell, the objective truth is surely not the point of the exercise.
The point of the exercise is power - the exercise of pure power. The culture warriors can run the table at the flick of the wrist, now.
I can stipulate to everything you assert about the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, and there is no less cause for alarm at its sudden and arbitrary proscription.
The totalitarian Bolshevik wing of the cultural Marxists seem to be in charge now, and the implications for our political future are disturbing.
Amen to that, lewy.
DeleteAridog, no worries my friend. If we all agreed on stuff this would be a boring place. We're just coming at it from two different angles: you're "THE FLAG is not historically correct" and I'm "the flag IS THE FIRST DOMINO". :)
DeleteAND...what lewy said!
DeleteLewy, you are amazing at articulation. I wish I had you're gift! Thank you.
"your gift", even. Gah. Night shifts addle my brain.
DeleteLady Red ... it is hardly a first domino. They've been falling for some time now. This was only dug up since the citizens of Charleston did not riot and the anointed crisis managers had to find some thing.
DeleteAnd Lewy ... I did not miss your reference to the "caliphate" regarding the flag you cited. Wonder what the cresent meant in the context of those times? Gotta go look that up, if possible. Cresents have meant many things, over time, my college frat had them in their symbology...and that was the first one started after the Civil War no less, by rather nasty Protestants...took years to acknowledge that blacks, Jews and Catholics were people too. Kicked off many campuses in the meantime...even without the now contested flag symbol...they were definitley southern in attitude.
I should add that the best way to deal with latter day muck rakers, who just must push an issue to silliness, is to ignore them. Why would anyone gain by shining a light on the muck-raker's ignorance?
ReplyDeletelewy, you're a toll AND a troll ;-)
