God damnit, Blogger just ate another simple post. I liked the video and thought it was funny.
Tell you all what, it may be "free" but it's also near useless. I for one will be happy to pay monthly in to a system that works, whether another format or just an improved version of Blogger like used by several others, and I suspect isn't free.
Ari, I hear you. I know you post at AA (not _that_ AA tee hee) and I have no idea as to why your posts get eaten more often here than there - I take it that is what you're basically saying...
...personally I've had only two or three posts eaten in the last year. Anything based on HTTP POST protocol is going to have some eaten posts / double posts and for me the Blogger rate isn't anything unusual. (i.e. when I was posting at The Command Post, WoC, DL, etc, the rate was about the same - a few eaten posts per year.)
I have gotten in the habit of doing Ctrl-A/Ctrl-C (Select All, Copy to clipboard) before hitting "Post Comment" - and those posts which get eaten and which I can therefore restore quickly with a Ctrl-V (Paste) I tend not to remember so much. So my overall rate is higher than I think. But FWIW, I did get in that Ctrl-A/Ctrl-C habit _before_ I got on Blogger, so the problem is in some sense generic to anything that uses HTTP POST.
With Blogger, there have been some issues involving weird inconsistencies as to when comments show up in the sidebar; these seem to have gotten better, at least for me.
Ari, if there's an upgraded version of blogger I'd not be averse to moving.
The reason Blogger works for us is the "Recent Comments" hack; the other "recent comments" features (e.g. in Wordpress) are not as customizable as what I've hacked up with Blogger (you can't use javascript in a Wordpress template.) There may be something that can be done with Wordpress "themes" - if anyone sees a wp blog with a Recent Comments section which would work for us, point me to it. Also, generic Wordpress comments basically suck (no preview) and many blogs use stuff like Disqus... which is a business, out to monetize you... and are still based on HTTP POST, and which can still eat your comments.
The ultimate solution would be an "autosave" feature - like gmail has for draft messages, and which Google Docs has. I love it and it works for me.
That, and a comment system based on Ajax/Comet (like Charles (pbuh) has at LGF) would be more robust to the inevitable connection failures - you'd lose stuff, but it would be a few words, not the whole long comment.
I'm trying to get back in coding mode. "Autosave" is enough of an improvement over the existing systems that it might be worth implementing.
Aridog, I'm so sorry that blogger munched your post (again). I'd love to upgrade our little blog, and maybe this summer we can all put our heads together and come up with something more user-friendly. Lewy has some wonderful ideas.
Awww ... don't pay any attention to my pissin' & moanin' about Blogger. Considering the traffic we have I'd say what we have is just fine. I only volunteered I'd pay up if others decided to update/upgrade.
All considered, I have little significant vested in TCKT because I declined to be a principle poster when you invited me ... at the time my reasons were for your benefit, given my reputation via my "nic" at comments elsewhere. You were getting snide "attention" as it was at the time and some of it even directed at me for participating. All said and done I respect you all for setting off on your own when you needed to do so and was flattered just to be asked.
I'm only a bit confused about why here and not on Blogger at Althouse, where it has never happened to me. On some threads it might have been better if it had occurred. Then again, I am only an "occasional" commenter at AA, although I enjoy reading it daily.
As for Wordpress ... it has it's own glitches, particularly with sign in and identity.
Aridog, if you change your mind about being a contributor, we'd all jump for joy. If you haven't noticed, we don't give a rip what anyone else thinks. :D
Hi all, late to the thread as usual. My blog is on wordpress.com and it does have a recent comment feature built-in from Wordpress.
As Lewy says, there are soem drawbacks to Wordpress; mainly you cannot use javascript on the free platform. However there are loads of themes and you just need to review them to find the theme you want. I chose twenty-ten because it's customizable (I have my own header) and a big choice of "widgets" so that I have a blogroll, recent comments, recent posts, archive etc. I can also post permanent pictures in the sidebar if I want (I did so during Pesach). Part of the reason I did not go with blogger was because of the problems I read you were having here (as well as other blogger sites).
Oh, forgot to mention - I think on Wordpress you are limited to how many "authors" (i.e. contributors) you may have on a free platform.
Re Aridog's issue with sign-in, I have never had a problem, and for comments you don't need to sign in, just type in your name and email. (unless the blog-owner chose to have registration).

I'd say the KISS principle applies here.
