Flooding In Pakistan

The situation is Pakistan after torrential monsoon rains is dire. The death toll has exceeded 1,000 and the Pakistani army is desperately trying to rescue 27,000 more. This is just the tip of the iceberg; Pakistan is also bracing for epidemic disease outbreaks.

"There is a desperate need for temporary shelter, clean drinking water and toilets to avert a public health catastrophe. People also need medical care and basic food items.

Many countries have mobilized to assist the Pakistan government, including the United States.

The US has delivered around 380,000 food packages, four rescue boats and two water filtration units.

The American Embassy in Islamabad also announced it would provide 12 prefabricated steel bridges to temporarily replace those damaged by the water.

Many of the people affected are among Pakistan's poorest, and what little they own has been washed away.
