Louis XVI, King of France and Navarre from 1774 to 1791, provided invaluable support to the new-born United States of America, not the least of it financial. But for the King's approval of his ministers' policy of support for the new nation--and a stick in the eye to the ancestral foe--it is fair to say that our nation would not have been born.
Speaking of being born, news comes our way from Spain about the recent birth of twin boys.
Translation: The Duke and Duchess of Anjou Have Announced The Birth of Their Sons, Louis and Alphonse.
The Duke and Duchess of Anjou, Louis Alphonse Bourbon and his wife, Venezualan Maria Margarita de Vargas Santaella, have announced the birth of their sons, Louis and Alphonse in a clinic in New York.
Or, to put it another way: the heir of Louis XVI, King of France and Navarre, the future Louis XXI of France and Navarre is.......an American.
I've been reading about the other Duke of Anjou. It's all very complicated, isn't it? And intriguing!
ReplyDeleteFun post, Jourdan. Thank you!
It's all very complicated, isn't it?

Great post, Jourdan. I loved the punch line. Just goes to show maybe we'll be real (if we were ever) friends with the French again, whether they like it or not. :| Assuming of course that France returns to a Monarchical course of governance.
ReplyDeleteThat's thin ice, eh, Lewy. :)
ReplyDelete"It's all gone pear-shaped. "

Q: Premier, what do you think of the French Revolution?
ReplyDeleteA: It's too early to say.
