I read years ago that the problem with US foreign relations is that the US sent polite diplomats to do negotiations whereas the other side sent cut-throat negotiators. The suggestion was made that we needed to send a powerful businessman instead.
Now we are doing that and look what is happening. In the long run it will benefit both sides.
