To Cherished Friends

Ahh, it's Saturday evening.  It's time to set aside the battles that have been fought during this long week, and take a breather.  Let me pour everyone a warm snifter of brandy.

Kick off your shoes, and I'll light a cozy fire to chase the shadows from the corners of the room.

Pull up a chair, and we'll chat about life in general.

Okay, maybe not THAT chair.  Let's see...this one looks comfy!

Ah, that's better!  So tell me...how is your family?  What are your plans for the summer?  And most importantly: do you think Bret Michaels will be the next person fired on Celebrity Apprentice?

  1. Yes, it's true. I do watch that silly show, and giggle over Trump's hair, and laugh at the eye-gouging fights and celebrity hissy fits.

The only other show that I watch regularly is "Who Do You Think You Are?". I'm a family history buff, so of course I'd be happy with a prime-time genealogy show, but even Noah has been hooked.

  2. I have no opinion on Brett Michaels, or any other TV program, as I don't watch any TV.

It has now become almost as much a matter of pride as it is disgust at the programming.

Tomorrow, Gus is coming over and we will build my new PC. About a $700 machine for about $395 (including a 22" flat screen monitor) and with Ubuntu as an OS.

This summer I plan to redo the floor in my sisters second bath, install shower walls in the primary bath, run the heat ducts in a more efficient way, put on a new roof and new siding.

    Ahh, I love relaxation.

  3. I get new cupboards and counters in two weeks, which leaves just the basement remodeling left for me to do. YAY!

I'm very much over the whole house fixing thing, even though we've gained four times the amount we've put into our house in remodeling in value (home values here aren't sliding again, as the government isn't getting any smaller). I'll be very excited to have it all done, although AFG thinks that I only think I'm sick of fixing stuff.

Other than that, I plan to continue on with my boxing training, even if it is kinda weak, blood blisters on my knuckles and all. Hitting things feels good, and we all already knew I was a bloodthirsty neo-con warmonger.

    :)

  4. Hmm, that snifter of brandy looks good but it's only 5.20pm here so my nose is in a teacup rather than a brandy glass!

I don't watch Celebrity Apprentice but can admit to watching 'Idol and Dancing With The Stars, they are my two trash TV guilty pleasures. We get the eastern time feeds as well as the PST ones on our cable service so we TIVO both shows so we can watch them after supper and skip through the commercials and sappy bits we don't want to see.

It's Matt's 35th high school reunion in August (my birthday weekend) so we will be going down to California for that. We were just discussing this morning where else we want to go this year for vacation. No decisions yet.

  5. As long as no one picks up a guitar and sings "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" or "Blowing in the Wind," I'm there.

I think we should save the brandy for after dinner. I'll make my world famous Nash Cosmopolitans for the evening cocktail.

As for Celebrity Apprentice, we haven't watched it since the first one. I thought that it amounted to "who has the bigger Rolodex," whereas the regular Apprentice was trying to find people who could handle business tasks.

But speaking of reality TV, I was in a dilemma this week with American Idol. On one hand we had a girl who loveable and had a great personality, but made terrible song choices and had laryngitis and therefore could not carry a tune in a bucket. On the other hand, we had a guy who had the personality of a lump of tofu. While the girl was awful, the guy was mediocrity personified. Which to choose? It turns out that the girl went. I hope the guy goes next week, but I almost think that the guy should have gone first. Certainly not the major dilemma of the week, but the philosophical implications were something to think about – poor quality with a heart, or cheap plastic dressed in a leisure suit.

  6. Actually, it's a 36th reunion. The 35th year just happened to slip by before we knew it. Just like the previous 34.

  7. The only thing that's been on my agenda for the last few days has been "breathe, and try to hack up the last of the phlegm in my lungs".

About the only amusing part of it has been my choices of medication - a witches brew of Chinese herbs and Western pharma. I have no doubt that orthodox practitioners of either tradition would he aghast. Tee hee. (Oh and vitamins - yes, mw, I'm taking my D-3)

Since my concentration for programing is lacking, I've spent the time catching up with the financial news. I think the Financial Times should hire M. Night Shyamalan as a managing editor; it would be thematically appropriate.

(Yeah... that's it... that captures it... see, I'm trying to convey my sense of where the markets are at without yapping excessively... The "Wall St" sequel which will be out this fall is directed by Oliver Stone, but it's not an Oliver Stone market out there... it's more like a David Lynch market out there... it's just weird... things look sort of normal on the surface, but you just know that something just isn't right...)

  8. Oh, you're so sweet!

(except for that hand chair...that's definitely not for my derriere)

  9. I don't watch it but Tom does, and I check in on it every now and them.

    I like The Donald.

  10. Florrie, you don't like being groped?

    OK. I'll go now.

  11. OOOH Lewy, that sounds nasty, hope you recover soon.

I have personally divested my portfolio of all things American and have asked my financial planner to make sure that my exposure to American investments is minimized as much as possible.

We are seeing Canadian equity funds recover nicely from the 2008 debacle with returns of +52%.

So glad I rode out the downtown and resisted the urge to sell low.

  12. awhh... thank you for the invite... and not the bashing. My battles weren't approached appropriately on my part but tis a lesson once again learned this week.

I don't want Celebrity Apprentice... at least I haven't yet. I've been really busy since the beginning of the year and that meant TV has been on the back burner. However, this year, it appears as though the cast is a very interesting one!!! But I doubt I will have time for it in the very near future as I have been working my butt off at finding the right career opportunity for me. I have decided to leave Vancouver as it is not for me. I have not acclimated to this city and although insanely beautiful, it's a city I would visit but no longer live here. Luckily for me, the opportunities are taking me out of the province towards areas that I truly enjoy being in. I have to be out of my apt by the end of April - so if the two current opportunities in the works fail - I will probably end up in Alberta. It is a bit stressful so a glass or two or three of wonderful libations, in a comfy chair in fun, interesting company... is very very desirable!

  14. Hmm. The side bar comment was interesting:

Radio Matt M: Florrie, you don't like being groped? OK. I'll go. . .

  15. Groped...hah!

lewy, you've been through the wringer, I'm glad you're doing a little better. The cough seems like it will never go away, eh?

(and don't forget the Vit C, take at least 2000 mg. daily).
