The honours were not given to them, they earned them. I don't think anyone is labouring under the assumption that those people are ready to go out and be front-line troops, but they work hard and will prove to be a valuable part if the IDF.
Perhaps that is why Israel is so strong: make good use with what you have and not make excuses.

I agree with Matt that this is part of what makes Israel so strong - "making use of what we've got" but it goes deeper than that. What struck me was the dignity with which these soldiers were treated. They weren't being patronised and patted on the head with a make-believe job. They all had real jobs to do, which if they didn't do it, someone else would have to. That is the truest way to integrate special-needs or any minority population.
