MAKE-AHEAD POTATOES
You have to have mashed potatoes to go with all that luscious turkey gravy. For years, I played switcheroo with pans of side dishes just to find enough space on my stove to cook them all. Then, I discovered the following recipe for perfect mashed potatoes which can be made in advance. Now, all I do is pop these in the oven when I take out the turkey. By the time the bird rests and is carved, the potatoes are hot and fluffy.
9 medium-sized white potatoes (Idaho, russets or Yukon Golds)
6 ounces low-fat cream cheese at room temperature
1 cup low-fat or nonfat sour cream
1 1/2 teaspoons onion salt
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 cup melted butter
2 teaspoons room temperature butter
Paprika for garnish
Peel and boil the potatoes. Drain and place in a large bowl. Add cream cheese, sour cream, onion salt, white pepper and melted butter. Beat with a mixer until fluffy. Place in a 2-quart casserole that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Dot with remaining butter. Cover and chill until ready to use.
To serve, preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake casserole 30 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with paprika for garnish.
Serves 8.

Recipe Of The Day!
I was doing my morning news-crawl when I ran across this recipe. Seeing as how the family will be at our place for the Thanksgiving feast, I squealed in delight and did a little jig. These taters will be a perfect time-saver, and they should be delicious!

That's a great solution, lady red! It's always a challenge to time the mashed potatoes with everything else.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, we never host so I don't have to worry about it...
Florie, you were going to host us once, but you arranged for the big snow storm so we couldn't get to your place. =((
ReplyDeleteI had forgotten about that, Matt! Yes, and you two were only about 20 minutes away :-(
ReplyDeleteYou and Fay (and all other CKT folks) are always welcome here anytime!
Basically, we don't host because our family get-togethers consist of at least 16 and we have a smaller-sized oven so it would be an "issue" to cook for that large a crowd.
One of these days I'd love to tear out the built-in, put in shelves and install a standard stove where the stove-top is...
"Serves 8."
ReplyDelete...or 2 of my family : P
We loves our taters. Perhaps I'll volunteer to bring the mashies this year.
2 of our family too, Alphie, lol!!
ReplyDeleteWe had some excitement late last night, here's what it looked like this morning.
img:"http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/floranista/treedamage11-17-11003.jpg"
This is called a "barberchair" as the fir split from the bottom. They are limbing what's standing now (150') to get ready to fall it as I type.
It was a miracle that the half that fell didn't take out a huge section of my garden.
Here's the other end of it:
ReplyDeleteimg:"http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/floranista/treedamage11-17-11006.jpg"
We were watching tv last night when the rain just started pouring down and the wind whipped up. Next thing we knew it sounded like a truck had hit our house (and it fell on the garage not the house). I'm so glad it fell on our garage, if it went the other way it could have fallen on our neighbor's house (the baby's room is right across from the tree). Thank God it didn't fall that way.
Oh noes florrie, that's terrible. I'm glad to hear nobody got injured and that all your beautiful plants survived.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fay. We're grateful for that too, that no one got hurt. It's really hard to comprehend just how big these trees are until one falls.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Florrie! So glad no one was hurt.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a heckuva big tree! I'm so glad you and Tom (and your house and plants)are okay florrie, and that the neighbors are okay as well.
ReplyDeleteScary stuff.
Freaky, florrie. Also glad, of course, that no one was injured, seems it was 'felled' perfectly in that sense.
ReplyDeleteYikes! That's quite a break there. Glad nobody got hurt; hopefully the damage isn't too bad on the garage there. I can't believe trees break like that often enough that you all have a name for it =: O
ReplyDeleteOur area had an incredible amount of tree damage in the snowstorm a couple weeks back- mostly just broken limbs ( but hundreds of them). There were some smaller trees that looked like they just got squashed by a giant boot. We had a bunch of big limbs in our tiny backyard, but no major damage. Our friends down the street weren't so lucky- a huge tree on the steep hill behind their house broke halfway up and crashed down on their roof. They had to move out because the tree is still attached at the point where it broke and they're worried it will break loose and swing down into the house like a giant pendulum.
I'm suppose you folks in the PNW have a name for something like that.
Uhhh- "I" suppose
ReplyDeleteI'm suppose you folks in the PNW have a name for something like that.
ReplyDeleteYes, we do, Alphie. It's called "Giant swinging pendulum".
tee hee, just kidding ;-)
We can laugh now that no person or rhododendron was hurt...
We had friends over for dinner last Saturday and I timed the mashed taters to be done by the time they arrived. Once the taters were tender Matt put them through the food mill in a big stainless steel mixing bowl and then we added melted butter and warm cream, mixed all together and covered in foil. Popped into the oven (which had been switched low because the casserole was cooked). We served dinner after appies and salad about 50 minutes later and the potatoes were perfect.
ReplyDeleteI'm just not sure about this recipe, heating up potatoes from stone cold whether they would be fluffy or not. I think I'd rather time them to be mashed at the point the turkey comes out of the oven and then keep warm as per the above.
But, that's just me.
:D
Wow! Florrie! That's a HUGE tree! Did it do much damage to your garage? I'm so glad no one was hurt and your garden is safe.
ReplyDeleteWe have 2 firs in our garden and the house committee is talking about cutting them down because they are extremely tall and bend like twigs in storms. I'm always waiting for one of them to come through my lounge windows.
annie, just the end of the tree - about 4" diameter - hit it and did considerable damage (repair guy estimated around $5,000 +).
ReplyDeleteWe plan on getting an arborist to look at our other trees just in case. I hope you get yours taken out, annie. It's very expensive but oh well, it's only money.
"It's very expensive but oh well, it's only money."
ReplyDeleteThere you go florrie, wealth re-distribution. Welcome to the brotherhood sister.
Fay, an awesome addition to mashed taters is sauteed onions. Dice 'em and throw 'em in the mix. Delicious.
ReplyDeleteAnd an aside...who here isn't watching American Horror Story....and what the heck is wrong with you if you aren't :-P
Oh, and hi everyone :-)
Hey RWC!
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of American Horror Story. Or are you referring to Obama?
img:"http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/floranista/rwcguy.jpg"
Wow florrie close call, glad the living things (babies and plants) are all OK.
ReplyDeleteThanks, lewy, me too...
ReplyDeleteflorrie,
ReplyDeleteOh dear. You are missing the greatest show.
Here is the pilot -
http://www.hulu.com/watch/286745/american-horror-story-pilot
Guarantee if you watch that you will be hooked.
ps - It can get confusing, but that's the fun of it. Yesterday I was online discussing the show for a couple of hours when one commenter stated - "Ladies-it's been great talking to you all about AHS" Hey!! I'm not the only guy on here.
ReplyDeleteHi RWC! I'm happy to see you! :)
ReplyDeleteFay, I'm thinking of popping the taters into the oven with the dinner rolls to reheat from warm to hot, while Noah is carving the bird. I'll report back on how well that works! :D
Thanks lady red. Happy to see ya'll too.
ReplyDeleteLadies, tee hee.
ReplyDeleteRWC, thanks for the link, I'll check it out!
RWC, we want to see American Horror Story so bad! We always have to wait until it gets to Netflix, though. Damn kids totally cut into our tv time.
ReplyDeleteDamn Blogger, if it eats this comment as well, I give up.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I haven't looked at videos on HULU in a while and now I see they want you to get an account to watch. So I checked out the trailer on YouTube and it looks intriguing! Unfortunately it's on the same night and time as TUF and I can't miss that. But there is only one more episode so I can catch up on American Horror Story! Thanks for the recommendation! I've heard Sons of Anarchy is also good...
afw,
ReplyDeleteIf you want I can scrounge up the episodes for you to watch online. Episodes 3,4,5,6 are on FX.com
It is such an awesome show!! Frickin' addicted.
And afw, you really can't wait until Netfflix as all the twists would be known. No fun in that :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't read ahead. :)
ReplyDeleteWe'll probably end up watching the entire thing in a two day marathon like we did with Jericho.
florrie,
ReplyDeleteYeah, a coworker is super into SoA. I want to watch it but I would have to go back 4 seasons to catch up.
Hulu asked you to register even with the link I posted? Didn't do that for me.
afw, I put this on the level of Jericho in "I have to see what happens next so I won't stop watching" category."
RWC, I don't know why but I just tried again and I don't want a HULU account :-( Comcast will let me watch episodes 4, 5 & 6 but I guess I'll have to go to YouTube for the first three...
ReplyDeleteWe'll probably end up watching the entire thing in a two day marathon like we did with Jericho.
ReplyDeleteSistah!
We did that with the first 3 seasons of The Sopranos :-)
florrie,
ReplyDeleteThis should work. They embedded it in their page.
http://www.geeksofdoom.com/2011/10/08/watch-now-american-horror-story-pilot-episode/
early Happy Thanksgiving all.
Thanks so much for the link, RWC! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
ReplyDeleteHere is episode 2.
http://www.videobb.com/watch_video.php?v=306spGIEi3SZ
We just finished watching the first episode, brrrrr! Creepy! We're going to watch the second one tomorrow. RWC, if you check in, do you have a link for the 3rd episode?
ReplyDeleteI think we're hooked :-)
ReplyDeletethat's it. We're watching it. Today. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteIf florrie likes it, I'm pretty sure we will, too.
afw,
ReplyDeleteJust for future reference, this was last nights epic episode- Episode 8 Rubberman
http://megashare.info/video.php?id=TXprM09BPT0&vhost=videozer
Oh, and going to an Uncle again, this time to a neice :-)
And in case you missed it at the end florrie-
http://theangstreport.blogspot.com/2011/10/tate-and-infanta.html
Oh, and going to an Uncle again, this time to a neice :-) :x
ReplyDeleteHere you go. I'd watch as soon as you can as they may pull it.
ReplyDeletehttp://videobb.com/watch_video.php?v=u2KjDILQx10q
And you can take a tour of the house here-
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youregoingtodieinthere.com/
Also have a timeline that shows the other murders that happened and when. But it contains some spoilers so I'll wait until you get further.
Hulu not available in Canada. Major whining and pouting ensues.
ReplyDelete:((
Fay,
ReplyDeleteGo to my #36, that should work. It's not hulu.
And #44 is the episode 3 florrie had requested.
ReplyDeleteThanks again and congratulations, RWC, you're a good uncle. I can't wait until you're a dad yourself :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks florrie :-)
ReplyDeleteSo episodes 1, 2, and 3 and 8 are on this thread.
Here is where you can watch 4,5,6,7.
Looks like the previous ep 3 was pulled. Here is another link-
ReplyDeletehttp://www.playever.com/american-horror-story-s01e03-murder-house/#more-2100
Go to the second screen, not the first.
Oops. For 4, 5, 6, and 7 -
ReplyDeletehttp://vod.fxnetworks.com/watch/ahs
Thanks RWC, it's a hulu embed on the site. So it doesn't work in Canada.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the new link for #3, RWC; we just now finished watching episode #2, brrrrrr.
ReplyDeleteGreat, scary show.
Drat, I can't find it on that site. Well, I can get it on IMBD if I register. I'll just use lady red's email addy.
ReplyDeleteJust kidding, just kidding!
Sorry Fay :-(
ReplyDeleteflorrie, it works if you try it a couple of time.
I tried it again and the the first time I had a glitch. Click on the vid where Vivian is in the yard.
http://www.playever.com/american-horror-story-s01e03-murder-house/#more-2100
It will try and take you somewhere else, but just close those windows. When it has 'help' and such in black, red, and white text you're golden :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dev. I was looking all over the net for one that would work, I came close on IMDB but then it was removed :-(
ReplyDeleteWe're pooped anyway from the long drive but I'll check in the morning and sure appreciate the links. We love the show, I'm glad you talked about it. Even though we get allot of channels it's all mostly merde.
Way to bust my super secret alias :-P
ReplyDeletehttp://www.playever.com/american-horror-story-s01e03-murder-house/#more-2100
I'm watching it again (so it must work). But have a good night.
Happy Too Much To Eat Day everybody
Oh shoot, sorry about that. :-o
ReplyDeleteDammit, that link just won't work for us. It's probably our browser (Windows 9); it puts up a window where I would have to sign up for ins quotes., etc. before it will let me access the page. When I try the address again, it takes me to a vampire site, WTF?
ReplyDeleteWe will probably just pay Amazon $2 and watch it there.
img:"http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/floranista/muttering.gif"
It does that for me too. But I just close the new window that opened up and hit play again and it works.
ReplyDeleteRWC is our connection, American Horror Story is our cocaine.
ReplyDeleteWe just finished watching episode 7 :-)
:-P
ReplyDeleteSo, any questions? My bud told me I know too much about this show :-P
LOL!!
ReplyDeleteI managed to find a free episode #8 last night, RWC, so we're all caught up and ready for 10:00 Wednesday night.
Great show, really creepy!
Where's episode 8? WHERE? And then I'll need #9, because J the L is somewhere crappy again.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I wait until a season is over to watch it! I want it all, all at once!
PS: Grimm is good, too.
I'll have to look it up, afw. Episode #9 is on this Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link, afw, it looks like it's still playing. It just takes a while to load.
ReplyDeleteThe Rubber Man
Now that you're all caught up, here is a timeline of events...
ReplyDeletehttp://americanhorrorstorytimeline.tumblr.com/timeline
I'm not caught up! AAAHHHHH! I can't watch episode 8 until AFG comes home, and that's not for 10 days!
ReplyDeleteI knew I would get addicted to this. I knew it.
I know!!! Me too!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's all I needed, another series which = more time sitting on my rear.
*sigh*
But it is and awesome show.
"That's all I needed, another series which = more time sitting on my rear."
ReplyDeleteSo, it's probably a good thing that I can't watch it in Canada.
Had my first follow up measurements since joining the new gym. I lost 9.5 inches, Woo hoo!
Only 109.5 to go, lol!
AFW and florrie,...do you think it might....uhhh, damn it. Catch up AFW. florrie, do you think it might jump the shark including the Vatican
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no, don't say that!!! It will be successful for at least 6 seasons like the Sopranos!
ReplyDeleteAnd Fay, congratulations! That is a wonderful accomplishment, I know how hard it is.
AFW, so you don't even know that_________ is the rubberman? :-P
ReplyDeleteDon't even go there. This is why I don't start series until I can watch them all in a marathon DVD session over a weekend. I have no patience.
ReplyDeleteYay. Black Dahlia!
ReplyDeleteNo spoilers, now...it's not on here in the Pacific Northwest for another hour!
ReplyDeleteOops, sorry. But the Black Dahlia was in the preview.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I saw that in the preview. I was just making sure you knew that our airtime was much later. I remember when I went on to DL before the American Idol finale and Stormi was on there talking about who won it.
ReplyDelete;)
