...don't bother with the American press. Rely on the foreign press.
Like, for example, one of today's lead stories from El Pais, the Spanish daily.
[Thirty per cent of Latinos living in the U.S. receive public health benefits, three times more often than non-Hispanic Whites and almost double that of African-Americans. To have a benefit of this type in the United States is a privilege that is not available to all, according to the latest data from the CDC. Approximately thirty per cent of citizens and residents of Latin origin receive medical benefits, in comparison to eleven per cent of non-Hispanic Whites and 17% of African-Americans].
There is a huge difference between a public welfare benefit going to 1 in 10 as opposed to nearly 1 in 3. Especially when the 9 out of the 10 "non-Hispanic Whites" are footing the bill, both for their own children and the 1 out of 3 Latino children.
Last year, the U.S. Government adjudicated more than 10,000,000 immigrant visa applications, with the vast majority of those coming from Latin America.

I already pay much closer attention to British news sources for information about the facts in the US.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if El Pais has an English-Language edition online?
Here you goDances...El Pais in English. I'm adding it to my morning news crawl. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt seems almost everyone is on some kind of gov't help these days. The whole system is like a black hole; it sucks people in one "benefit" at a time. Although the stats regarding Latinos are troublesome (to say the least), the problem is systemic and ideological.
It won't be, perhaps can't be, fixed anytime soon, IMHO.
