Earthquake And Tsunami Devastate Japan

The pictures coming out of Japan are horrific.  My aunt said some schools on the Oregon coast have closed in preparation for a possible tsunami there.  The Blaze has a collection of videos...here is one.

The earthquake's epicenter was hundreds of miles from Japan, yet it registered 8.9. The tsunami that rolled inland measured 23 feet.

UPDATE:

From Fox News:  "Hundreds of bodies found after 23-foot tsunami strikes northern coast of Japan, washing away cars and damaging buildings, following a magnitude 8.9 earthquake. Tsunami waves hit Hawaii as coastal residents from SoCal to Oregon move to higher ground."

UPDATE:

Photograph of Japan from Fox News:

Noah is watching a live webcams of our coast from San Clemente and Santa Monica.  All is calm so far.

UPDATE:  From Yahoo News: "The first waves hit Hawaii about 1400 GMT (9 a.m. EST) Friday. A tsunami at least 3 feet (a meter) high were recorded on Oahu and Kauai, and officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger"

  1. Noah reports he was watching the cops evacuate the beach in San Clemente, and then the camera was shut down. The Santa Monica feed is still up.

  2. Fox is reporting that thousands have been evacuated from Crescent City, and that the coastal roads in Oregon are jam-packed with people seeking higher ground.

  3. Oh, this is horrific! Since our oldest decided that she wants to take Japanese as her foreign language in HS (her class this year had a very well done module on Japan and its history and culture this year), our family has been learning about Japan.

Because of the work they put into preparation and building codes, the tolls won't be as high as they would be elsewhere, but it's still going to be horrible. :-(

  4. Fox is reporting that 88,000 people are missing in Japan, plus an entire passenger train. God in heaven. They also have a nuke plant that's malfunctioning. The aftershocks continue to rock the country.

  5. You know, I feel like I did in the aftermath of the Boxing Day Tsunami and Katrina - my mind just can't process that scale of devastation.

Prayers for all the survivors who will be dealing with all of this for months and years to come.

  6. I pray that it is mere confusion which is responsible for many of the missing.

I'll be getting the word on what's going on in Hawaii from my inlaws in honolulu tonight most likely.

Also, I have a friend who's going to Tokyo next week - it will be an interesting conversation when she gets back.

  7. More horrific, if you live or work there ... Japan has many areas that are "reclaimed" land ... e.g., land built out from a coast with dredge material. Much of this has been water soaked and destabilized, by quake shake and tsunami, from the early reports I've heard ...e.g., turned to quick soil that will disappear from under the buildings there on.

Lewy14 ... your friend better check what Tokyo airports are open first, make multiple ticket purchases (if important enough a trip), etc., just in case. I've seen at least one airport under water on Fox and CNN.

I'm trying to find out now if Korea was impacted by the quake or Tsunami ... the news is scant so far.

  8. I saw the headline on Drudge about 88,000 missing in Kyoto, but that has been taken down now - I am praying it was a mistake.

  9. I keep looking at the pictures and wondering how to even begin to clean up the aftermath - how does one deal with piles of houses?!? The little I've seen must be repeated over and over along hundreds of miles of coastline...

  10. Aridog, everything I've seen says that South Korea was unscathed; the waves pretty much went the other way. The economic fallout, however...

One thing that's very worrying now is the nuclear plants that appear to be overheating - as if they didn't have enough to deal with!

  11. Aridog - came across this graphic; the south Japan protected South Korea.

  12. Lyana # 11 ....

Thanks. That is what I suspected, but the graphic makes it clear.

  13. Things are very bad this morning in Japan. Earthquake, tsunami, and now the threat of multiple nuclear reactor meltdown. Scary stuff.

There are over a million homes with no water, and 2 million without electricity. Many people are without shelter entirely. It won't be long before disease sets in.

What has happened and what IS happening to these people is horrific.

  16. Let's try that again ... Satellite Photos "before" and "after" of the quake and tsunami devastation in Japan.

Move the "slider" back and forth left to right, etc. to see the before and after changes.

  17. New video from the moment the tsunami hit. Very chilling.

  18. The before/after pictures left Noah and I speechless. The devastation is beyond belief.

The video captures the raw power of the water. Boats are tossed about as if they were a child's toys! You can't run, and you can't hide.

    What a nightmare.

  19. Fox just reported that there has been another huge explosion at Fukushima, and that there are sirens sounding all over Tokyo.

  20. Two things.

I'm appalled but not at all surprised that the slaughter of the family in Israel is as nothing to the world in general. Which tells me, to say fuck the world in general. 'We' are on our own.

The US of A should be mounting a massive effort to help Japan with its troubles. Way more than the 7th Fleet swinging into action.

Instead, President asshole does his sweet 16 picks.

    That disgusts me.
