Adele

So, after rabbiting on about how untalented and slut like most of today's young female singers are, I stumble upon this gem. Adele is a 22 year old Brit who is making quite a name for herself and winning awards. She is currently in the number one spot on both the single and album charts in the U.K. Not only does she appear in her videos and on stage fully clothed, a feat seemingly not achievable by most of today's "stars", this girl can SING.

Here is the first track from her latest CD. I love it!

  1. Agree, Fay. This woman can sing. Her voice appeals, in so many ways. I wonder though, if she needs songwriters who strike her passions. As a challenge, I mean.

I'm really ignorant about music, so excuse my musings.

  2. Sounds like a good question to me. I think that is why so many of the classic old songs are still being done. They touch something inside even some of today's singers.

  3. yep she is great, and love the song "Right As Rain" and "Chasing Pavements" from Adele 19 Deluxe CD.

  4. Yes, Matt. And hopefully it goes without saying that she is surely capable of writing her own songs. Which would be, classics in themselves, I'm sure.

Now you will have me googling, Pamela.

  5. I'm completely smitten by this song and cannot hear it enough times. I truly don't remember the last time I was so taken by a new young artist.

  6. That voice! I didn't expect it. She's got raw, natural talent and a voice beyond her years. wow, good find, Fay.

I'm SO sick of all the singers copying Beyonce and Amy Winehouse, ugh. It all seems so pretentious. Never mind Gag Gag.

  7. Here's my rendition of 98% of the current young batch of singers.

Let me set the stage first - lots of phallic symbols, eggs also ok, anorexic androgynous dancers/slaves in body suits and scary makeup, throw in some some dog leashes, choke collars, etc. and we're ready go.

Uh uh oh, uh oh, uh uh oh

    *runs*

    *more irritating runs*

*add falsetto if it's a guy*

Uh oh oh, uh oh oh, uh uh, oh.

Grab crotch and/or kiss same sex person on stage for cheap thrills/ have wardrobe malfunction.

    Ta daa!

My sentiments exactly florrie. I said to Matt that she is an old soul with a voice much more mature than her years. And the song strikes me as an old refrain dressed up in a pop arrangement.

And I completely agree with this review I read today said:

"She’s extraordinary. It seems so…easy. And it’s legitimate talent. No bells, whistles, nipples, ornaments, flying saucers, just a girl with a voice and songs that mean something. "

Dead on! They all look/sound/writhe/dress/screetch/repeat the same. Your description is perfect.

Well if that's true I'm right behind you woman!

But, we all know it isn't true.

    Smooches.

    So well said. How refreshing.

    Night, night.

  13. So my first reaction was OMG, this woman wrote this song about a real, recent breakup, and, well... I was right!

(Adele will go far - she is every late-night host's dream; a brassy, classy, genuinely funny woman who will light up the audience like a torch).

Fay wrote: I truly don't remember the last time I was so taken by a new young artist.

In writing a hit single about her breakup, she reminded me immediately of Alanis Morisette - when I heard You Oughta Know for the first time back in 1995, I also knew it was about a real breakup. Something terribly raw in both songs.

I hadn't listened to You Oughta Know in years - my impression is that it hasn't aged very well. One reason I think it has aged poorly is that so many female "artists" have referenced (with bogus affectation - per florrie 7) the shock and vulgarity in Morisette's performance to the point where the song feels stale - but it was released sixteen years ago, and back then it was fresh and authentic.

The audio in the YouTube link is terrible; a CD in a good car stereo at high volume is the perfect experience. That said, Morisette's pure singing chops just don't compare to Adele.

Fay: Not only does she [Adele] appear in her videos and on stage fully clothed...

That got me thinking... well, maybe just free associating here...

...I cannot believe it has been over thirteen years since Fiona Apple released Criminal.

Now obviously, Fiona doesn't exactly appear fully clothed in this video... however... I like it because it was - in my opinion - a subtle but effective indictment of the whole exploitative youth culture of MTV.

The erotic tableaux in the video have actual artistic merit and are not purely prurient; I say this because I find the images more disturbing than arousing, and I think this is the artists' (singer and director) intent. Others may differ, but that's my read.

Glad I watched it again after so long. Once. Of course, simply keeping your clothes on is a form of protest even more subtle and sublime.

I do think Criminal has aged pretty well; Fiona Apple struck me as a talented and compelling singer back in the day, and still does.

  14. Wow ... I've missed "Adele" ... until now, thanks Fay. She claims early influence by the Etta James/Ella Fitzgerald jazz/blues/R&B style ... and it shows. Just wow ... all I can say as a Jazz fan from way back, one who prefers more instrumental than voice unless it's vibrantly *real*. She's all that.

In Jazz or Blues or old Appalachia Country, immediate personal experiences are often sung ... as Lewy14 has pointed out that Adele is doing in this piece.

    Wow.

  21. I like Duffy too for the same reason, great talent and not a cookie cutter anorexic.
