Angry Black Woman Is Angry Again

She's always struck me as being perpetually angry and defensive. Now she's angry at being portrayed by the people who know her best as "angry".

First lady Michelle Obama is challenging assertions she's forcefully imposed her will on White House aides and says people have inaccurately tried to portray her as "some kind of angry black woman."

I'll be so freakin' glad when this woman is loading up the UHaul for the long trip back to ChiTown. I'm sure the next first lady, whoever she may be, will exhibit more class and appreciation than Michelle Obama; it wouldn't take much.

  2. In defense of our First Lady - with respect to the above picture of her with Carla Bruni - hey, at least Michelle is able to furrow her brow like a normal human being. Carla exhibits Zen tranquility - she has no choice, she's lost the ability to display emotion on her face due to Botox. The frenchwoman ain't poised, folks, she's paralyzed. Two cheers for Michelle having the courage to emote and age like the rest of us.

  3. Okay then who's been in here redecorating? What's with the reply feature and the quotation marks?

    Vikram? Yoohoo....

    1. There's something a bit screwy with our template CSS; somehow we get these damn quote marks - I'll have to check it out; I think that by tweaking the CSS in the template we can get rid of the big quote mark background in the comments.

    1. Naw, just read to me from the CSS manual... my hands are dirty, don't want to mark it up...

  6. OK - I took out the quote mark background but I can't quite figure out how to add it back in on the main post. It was seriously bugging me in the comments - I'll work on it a bit later.

Also need to add back in the emoticon stuff - the addition of threaded comments broke this. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to get that working again as well.

Gotta go do some other stuff right this second though.

    1. OK fixed the emoticon insertion. ;)

Sadly, however, reviewing the code, I totally don't remember how I did the emoticon drop down panel. I think a chunk of the template has gone missing. I know I made backups somewhere... let me see if I can find. In the meantime if anyone has an old copy of the template lying around, email me... thanks!

  10. OK.

So I think I'm leaving things in a usable state, at least.

    WARNING: semi-technical stuff ahead.

The threaded comments had the effect of replacing some stuff in the template which was "pseudo-html" with a bunch pure javascript. In particular there is no longer any defined html template code for individual comments, or the comment editing box.

So the individual comment numbers which lady red added are no longer working, because the template structures that the code "hooks on to" is no longer there. This is somewhat less of an issue given the ability to reply directly to individual comments but it's still a shame to lose. Numbering would have to get threaded as well... in other words, comment 1, comment 1.1 (in reply to comment 1), etc... otherwise the numbers would all change each time someone replied to a comment further up the thread. Something like this might be hackable in js, but not tonight...

Same issue with the emoticon drop down menu. Nothing to hook onto any more. Ideally it would "float" with the comment editing textbox but so far I've had no luck hacking that. Fallback is to have the emoticon menu on the side somewhere, or fixed at the bottom or the top of the comment block (it would still be dynamically open and closeable like it was.)

Note all the old emoticons work if you know the codes... most people have favorites that they know, so that shouldn't be an immediate problem.

    Thoughts? Votes?

Well done Lewy! I'm impressed! Perhaps you can help me hack wordpress's code one of these days...

    1. annie - thanks for logging on and testing. Nice to know that OpenID works OK too.

The bad news for "hacking wordpress" code is that it can't really be hacked. That's also good news in a way, because the "freedom" that Blogger gives you to hack the templates comes at a cost...

...which is that they change the templates out from under you and break your code. The threaded comments are their doing - I had to get emoticons working again. I believe an "oy" or two is warranted...

Blogger rolled out this change without warning, and without a way to turn it off and retain the "embedded" comment settings. Niiice.

As of this hour DWT is locked out - can't even see the comments. Weird. Weirder still, TCKT is working better for me than blogger's own post announcing the change.

All that said, I think overall Blogger is finally stepping up into some more modern features which should work better over time. I suggest that we look at switching to one of their newer templates, which will probably be better supported going forward.

    2. It was my pleasure to be your beta-tester Lewy :). The problems you cited above are the main reason why I decided to go with Wordpress rather than Blogger. I've heard of several blogs that had a lot of glitches with Blogger.

Wordpress too have made minor changes, but not to the actual templates. Rather, they are on the admin panels and other backroom stuff, so they don't affect the day-to-day running of your blog. I hope...

I was only kidding (sort of) about hacking Wordpress's code. I know that their free version is hack-proof, which is both a plus and a minus, although if I buy my own domain and use Wordpress's professional themes, I can customise them as much as I want (I think). But all that is a step too far for my technical abilities. If I went down that route I would take professional help.

Meanwhile, here is a well-deserved Oy for you. An Oy Vey even! :))

  14. Lewy, thank you for all your hard work! I had no idea that blogger was going to add comment reply, or that it would break our hooks.

I think the emoticon menu hooked to the bottom of the comment block would be fine. What do you all think?

Upgrading to a newer template scares the heck out of me; it's easy to break a blog or lose a lot of hard work by experimenting with templates. However...I'm in. We gotta keep up with the times! . :)

We certainly need to figure a way to get DWT back on board. To me, that's priority one.

    Annie, thanks for the testing!

  15. Hmm, there was a bit of foul-mouthed stupidity there but it seems to have suddenly disappeared.

'Anonymous' - check the other threads and you will see that we do not generally foul-mouth here.

That makes you the troll, and me the biggest of the Three Billy Goats, about to knock your sorry behind into the fast-running stream where you will soon be washed away and forgotten.

You may come back, however, IF you grow up enough to use actual language and real reasoning, though for now, I dought you are capable of either

    1. Hmm, and now I see on Gmail that there was some pride about out 'first' troll.

So let me assure you that he was not the first, I am afraid. Only the first to make it past the filters at Blogger.com.

Each time I come into the Dashboard, I check 'comments' first, and do a lot of erasure. There have been silly ads, a couple of other foul-mouths (foul-keyboards?) etc. And some I've allowed in who seemed to be decent human beings simply commenting on old threads.

And even a couple from Mauro, although he has not been back in a while.

Not really "pride", Dances, I was being sarcastic :-) I hated to see that kind of low brow stuff on these pages...

  16. Thank you for handling so much of the admin stuff DWT, and for being such a handsome and charming bouncer too. You and florrie are both right; we don't need name-calling here, and we sure as heck don't need hysterical opinions.

For the record, I trust your judgment unconditionally, and I'm sure everyone else does too. That's one of many reasons I love this place so much...we ALL take care of TCKT; not just posting great reads, but sweeping the floors too. :)

  17. I've just removed 'I Own The World' from the sidebar blog list, because two times in a row my AVG detected active threats there.

It may have been something they had linked to, but. . .
