Why Is Harassment in Schools an Issue?

Permit me to continue Fay’s thought from below.

I believe that a gay school student deserves to be able to attend school without being harassed.

I also believe that fat kids deserve to be able to attend school without being harassed. And kids with red hair. And kids with glasses. And Kids who can't play basketball. And math nerds.

But notice that it was not until a kid who was thought to be gay was harassed that we all of a sudden needed pink ribbons and national days of protest.

Somehow schools seem to think they can do the equivalent of “legislating morality.” They think by having “zero tolerance” they solve the problem. What happens? The punks still harass. They just know how and when to do it. If the victims, unless he is gay, complains, the reaction is “no harm, no foul.” Finally, the punk takes it one step further and physically attacks the victim. The victim either meekly submits or he fights back. But if he fights back he is in just as much trouble as the punk.

And what if other kids see the harassment taking place? What can they do? Words mean nothing, and if these other kids take action to a physical level, well, then they are in trouble.

Perhaps you have seen this video. You can’t help but say, “Way to go, dude.”

I doubt the little twerp will ever bother this kid again. And I doubt anyone else will, either.

It is time for schools to take their heads from the clouds.

  1. And as an added thought, how many kids side with the bully thinking, "Better that other kids than me."?

  3. Wow! Brilliant fight-back! I just hope he doesn't get into trouble for "violence". How often does the victim get into trouble for being caught fighting back?

My son had a similar story when he was in elementary school. He was systematically bullied for a long time, probably because he had learning difficulties and had remedial lessons. We sent him to karate lessons to burn off excess energy and to give him self confidence. The trouble was the 'sensai" (teacher) drummed it into their heads that karate was only a sport and ONLY to be used in self-defense. We told our son to try a few karate moves on the main bully but he would innocently repeat "Sensai said we mustn't use it except in self-defense". We had to sit him down and explain what self-defense actually meant.

The next time he was bullied, he picked up the bully - in his chair - and slammed him down on the other side of the room. That was the last time he was bullied and he got a huge cheer from the class. They had all been too scared to overtly root for him in front of the bully until then - which goes to prove Matt's comment in #1.

However we did eventually move him to another smaller school where he thrived. (This is all 15 years ago at least).

  4. Do not screw with happy fun husky kid!!! Evah evah!

annie, I have a "nephew" (friends son) who has been doing karate since he was about 6. He's going to be 13 this year, and he is a formidable young man. I'm going to give him the Little Black Book of Violence to try to deprogram some of the non-violence orthodoxy his parents have fed him. That, and maybe tell him about krav maga...

  7. So, I shouldn't delete it, despite the fact it cannot even spell it's own supposed name?

I was thinking I could at least edit out the web address, just in case it is some virus-laden hell hole.
