Senate and House rules are changed all the time, and both parties try to do so to their own advantage. Those can always be changed back.
I think Schumer might be a bit too optimistic about the Democrats having the required majority to change the rules after the next election.
I wish they had played the parts of the recording they talk about, regarding the Bill of Rights. While I don't doubt that he would very much like to override the Constitution to increase central gov't powers, they presented no evidence except their own dismay.
As it is, it is like accusing someone of bank robbery then presenting evidence of parking on a hydrant.
Schumer says that the right of the Senate to make its own rules supersedes the Constitutional dictate that some things require a 2/3 majority vote in the Senate.
I contend that the right of the Senate to make its own rules deals with housekeeping matters -- and making the law of the land is not a housekeeping matter for the Senate. If the Senate wants to make a rule that Senators must wear a powdered wig when voting, then go for it. But for a law that the Constitution says requires a 2/3s vote requires a 2/3s vote. Period.
Schumer is advocating a power grab. He wants to make it so that that Senate can do whatever it wants and not have to answer to anybody
It has been a long time since I read Article 1, but, the things that require a 2/3 majority are clear and few. Impeachment. Removing a fellow senator. Over-turning a presidential veto.
Believe me I am not defending Chuck U. Schumer, who I call the 'Cop-Killer-Senator', and who I wuold love to see gone not only from the senate, but from the planet.
I still wish they would play that portion of the tape where he makes the comment about 'looking at the Bill of Rights'.
That might be actionable as a violation of his oath to protect and defend the Constitution.
Monkey, could you post that as a regular link, too, please?
ReplyDeleteMy media player is really screwed up on this PC.
Sure DWT, hang on. So far as I am aware there is no text yet of the video, but I will go back to the youtube page....
ReplyDeleteYoutube link secret recording made with Chuck Schumer pondering changing the Constitution and Bill of Rights to get things he wants.
ReplyDeleteUnreal.
Jeebus. Is Schumer contemplating a coup d'état? He's walking a fine line...
ReplyDeleteHopey changitude caught on tape.

Sorry, should have posted a link. My hardback copy is still in a damn box in a damn garage, so this is where I found it to read (sans amendments):
