  4. From a liberal, union classmate:

The President has just confirmed that the DC earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as "Bush's Fault." The President also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake's suspicious ties to the Tea Party. Conservatives however contend that it was caused by the founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

    =))

  5. There's fault lines in downtown Portland. There was a 3.somethin that felt like an SUV hit the house when we lived in the West Hills. Now we live downtown in a highrise apt. A mild earthquake might tip one of our chairs over. I'd probably shit my pants all the same. But hey, that's what laundry is for.

@lr#4 - awesome. Maybe we'll see a combined Beck/Kos march on Washington yet...

  6. There are lots of quivers and quakes in Vancouver. The three I remember most vividly are:

    1) Woke up at about 3am, thought I was dreaming because I heard a horrendously loud rumble travelling down my street followed almost instantaniously by the earth moving. Next day realized I had experienced my first earth quake. I will never forget that sound.

    2) Sitting on my coach with my legs up watching TV. No noise, just the sensation of what I thought was a very large animal underneath my couch lifting it off the ground.

    3) At work on the 15th floor of a highrise tower and feeling it move. Looking out of the window of my office and seeing the surrounding towers swaying, meanwhile yelling to evertone to stop looking out of the windows and dive under a desk.

  7. LMAO at the picture and comments! :)

We've had a few tremors over the years here, but the biggest was a 6.5 in 1995. It was 6 a.m. and with no warning our beds gave a huge jolt. Simultaneously the whole household woke up and yelled "Junior!" (aka the name of our 2nd son) because he was apt to wake us up in the mornings by shaking our beds. Then we heard a quavery voice from the next room: "I'm in my b-b-bed!".

I have to admit I was freaked out. It seemed to go on for ages and got stronger before it stopped. We only had minimal damage - mainly, the toilet jumped away from the wall so we had a bit of a leak (and an unusable loo for a few days).

The aftershocks terrified me too and I was scared to be alone in the house for a long time afterwards.

My parents said they were lying in bed "enjoying" the strange sensation of seeing the light swinging like crazy. Suddenly my dad said "you do realize, at any moment the neighbours might crash through the ceiling". That's when they took cover. :))

  8. I was in the middle of getting home when this happened. Since I was 30 miles from the epicenter of Loma Prieta and smack in the middle of Coalinga, along with all the other wonderful smaller quakes that happen when you live along a fault line in CA, the actual earthquake itself didn't bother me. They break up the day.

On the other hand, my house wasn't made for an earthquake area - so I was worried constantly until AFG got home and made sure that no pipes had busted and attempted to drown my dogs!

I do love the picture. And I'm surprised at so little damage being done by a 5.8'er in an area with no earthquake preparedness.

Tornadoes, though? Scare the ever-living hell out of me. I remember freaking out every single time the tornado siren went off when we lived in Texas and running for my bathroom. I kept granola bars under the toilet. And I cursed the lack of a basement every single time.

Annie - obviously you get your sense of humor from your parents. :) How funny!

  9. After the quake, the weather arose as Le Threat du Jour ... CNN's Theme of the week ... and they're so disappointed. Expected devastation and all they got was wet and a blow job like Dominique Strauss-Kahn. How fitting.
