What a great day! President Trump is considering signing an executive order to halt the lunacy of birthright citizenship. I wonder if he can make it retroactive?
One of my favorite smart guys Nassim Taleb is on fire, and we have a new meme. This one will stick. It cuts them most deeply when it's true. Blue blood everywhere!
I was doing some paperwork this morning when this came on the radio. I dropped everything and listened with total rapture. Good stuff.
Unless it is Bill Clinton raising taxes, the government can’t have ex post facto laws.
ReplyDeleteIf he makes it retroactive _enough_, we _all_ become illegal aliens.
DeleteMy mother was born an American citizen to two certified Krauts in 1919.
So when exactly should she have gotten naturalized? Am I a citizen?
OTOH if one American parent is enough, then let's take it back to 1789, because then I get to evict you all LOL!
;)
How about from 1965?
DeleteThen you throw out half my friends' kids. Figure I'm the median tech person. You see the problem?
DeleteEven if I wanted to - and some days I'm tempted - that would be a horrible situation however it turned out.
This has been on my mind since you posted it. I don't have the easy answer. There is no easy answer. I gather your buds are here on H1b visas, so they're here LEGALLY. There may need to be a "special circumstance" for their kids if they've applied for citizenship. If they're planning on going home to their own countries, I'm sure they'll take their munchkins too.
DeleteAnd Matt, I'm sure you're correct. I just got carried away! :)
Deletelady red - and flo - I have to say, one thing I don't understand about Taleb is his disdain for GMOs in general and Monsanto in particular.
ReplyDeleteMonsanto has plenty of grounds for hatred on the grounds of hateful commercial practices which have little directly to do with the science of GMO.
But Taleb is no idiot. I have to understand his argument.
(My view of Monsanto: lazy corporate types listened to their lawyers over their field people... that or they have no decent field sales org in which case they have really horrible corporate culture... the field sales team is the org that saves the customers from their vendors attorneys in virtually every American enterprise ever, anywhere, in any vertical.)
THAT, my dear lewy, is a whole other kettle of fish!
DeleteI would welcome a post on Monsanto. *hint hint* :D
Maybe we all get Patreon accounts so we can bribe each other to blog moar lol... 8)
DeleteI thought about that before and laughed. We'd be circulating the same five bucks between us! :))
