That is thing about a great song. Talented people can take the song in many directions and it sounds good. For example, check out Sam Cookes' version: http://youtu.be/l7D8uxDt8dY
From the original production of Porgy and Bess, here is Anne Brown from an original recording although she only sang the reprise later on in the actual production:
This is outstanding Fay! I've never heard Stewart's version; his vocal talents are mesmerizing.
I think all music lovers have their fave rendition of Summertime. Mine is Janice Joplin's. Her interpretation and Stewart's are so different that it's like comparing apples to oranges...two different songs entirely, really.
That was very jazzy, different from any version I had heard before. I liked it, Fay, thank you! Like lady red, I never heard of Billy Stewart either.
I tried to follow Earl's link but it's not allowed in the US. I did find a version of it though, very spiritual. I guess we all have our favorites, I like the Billie Holiday but my favorite is Janis Joplin. Isn't it amazing how many truly different versions of this song have been recorded? My mom and dad had the Porgy and Bess LP, I believe from the 40's Broadway run (?) so I have heard this song since I was a little girl.
Sorry for so many posts in a row, I'm trying to catch up on all the posts...
Ooooh, the long version. Crank it!
ReplyDeleteA great recording. Without question. A superb recording.
ReplyDeleteBut no one beats Paul Robeson:

True florrie, there have been many versions (the proof of a good song I'd say). My mother had the original Broadway recording as well.
DeleteI like Janis' version too but I would take Billy Stewart version over hers and then Ella's.
That is a real compliment to him as I know how much you love Ella!
DeleteGood night, all!
