A Glimpse Of Rick Perry's Character

This morning I stumbled on a story about Perry I hadn't heard. A few years ago, he and his wife Anita reached out to help a troubled young SEAL.

Over time, Rick and Anita Perry – the parents of two children – offered him a spare bedroom in the third floor of their Austin-area home. (They still are unable to live in the Texas Governor’s Mansion since it was burned by an arsonist while being renovated in 2008.)

Luttrell’s bed was nothing more than an air mattress, the governor related.

Perry said he also intervened with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to get Luttrell the medical and psychological treatment he needed. He ended up being a regular presence in the home for about two years.

In response to Luttrell's plight, the Perry family didn't form a committee, or cobble together an exploratory group, or commission a taxpayer-funded board. Instead, they opened their home and their hearts to help a heroic young man regain his balance and his purpose in life.

With the Romney machine in full steamroller-mode, I know that the Perry family will not be residing at 1600 anytime soon; however, it's comforting to know that we do indeed have leaders with character.

  1. I don't know if the article goes into it or not but Marcus Luttrell was the lone survivor of his unit. Hence the book title "Lone Survivor." A Pashtun village took him into hiding and after a week trekked to the nearest US base for them to pick him up.

Another thing about him to get your blood boiling, DASY, his puppy given to him to aid in his rehabilitation, was shot by 4 punk ass kids and killed. DASY was named for Danny Dietz, Matthew "Axe" Axelson, Southern boy (Marcus), and Michael "Yankee" Murphy. Members of his team that were killed. I wish the kids weren't arrested and they went after Marcus (as they threatened to do upon arrest.) Let him have his way with them.

  2. I think I left a recommendation here about Lone Survivor. It's an amazing and heart-breaking book that talks about becoming a SEAL, how this particular group of men worked together, and the mission in Afghanistan about which the book is named.

Just so people don't get the wrong impression, the Luttrell family are extremely close and supportive, I think Marcus just chose to sleep on an air mattress (whether due to injuries he sustained on the mission or just from personal preference, I don't know).

A huge number of people from his town camped out for more than a week on the edge of his parents property to lend support to the family while the family waited for word if Marcus was dead or alive.

  3. lady red, why do you have such animosity towards Romney? He's actually the one who helped Perry out when he was stumbling with what government departments he would close during that debate.

It's politics, they are ALL attacking each other. I don't like it either but I'm resigned to it.

  4. I have not made up my mind about Romney, but any Republican who is a somewhat liked by the MSM is someone of who I am personally wary.

We are now coming up to the time when the real candidates will start to rise to the top. Everything before this has been a dog and pony show orchestrated to give the MSM something to do.

  5. In my humble opinion, I don't think the media likes Romney one bit. After all, they're the ones who invented this "anti-Romney candidate" bull shit.

Like you and several others here on TCKT have stated before, Matt, we aren't going to let the MSM pick our candidate - or define them either.

  6. Florrie, I just don't like him and don't trust him. His pro-choice stance when he was running for office in Massachusetts rankles me, because I think he took that position for purely political reasons (which I find morally nauseating). Also, like McCain before him, I feel the Repub establishment has promised him that it's "his turn". That also rubs me the wrong way. I actually have a long list of things that put me at odds with Romney.

On the flip side, I think he did a superb job with the Olympics, and I think he does have more financial savvy than Obama or W. He's a good public speaker, and I doubt he would do anything to tarnish the office. The fact that he's a Mormon goes into the plus column for me; as a group, I've known Mormons to be fierce patriots.

I'll be watching to see who he's surrounding himself with, and who he'll likely choose for a running mate, a potential cabinet, and potential SecState and SecDef.

If it comes down to JEM vs. Mitt, I'll vote for Mitt, but he's definitely not my first choice.

Matt, I think the MSM is cheering Romney on because they think they can rip him to shreds later. Like you, it makes me a bit nervous. However, florrie has an excellent repartee when she says "Like you and several others here on TCKT have stated before, Matt, we aren't going to let the MSM pick our candidate - or define them either."

    Touché mon amie! :X

  7. Thanks, lady red. None of my favorites ran, Rubio, Christie, John Bolton.

Right now I just want BO out.

I must be missing the cheering the MSM is doing for Romney. Even Bret Baier got pushback from Romney for the toughness of that interview.

  8. The Baier interview was a light warm-up for what's coming from the Obama-Nasties. Romney needs to keep his cool and not be so cranky; he's gonna have a LONG 10 months ahead of him if he doesn't get a grip on his indignation (especially after the convention in August, if he is indeed the R candidate).

Do you guys think Trump will actually run as an Indie?

  9. I guess what I was trying to say was that even the Republican-friendly FNC asked tough questions of Romney. I just haven't seen any support for him from the MSM. If anything, they trumpet Huntsman, the closest candidate to their political ideology, although they'd never vote for him over BO.

OK, this isn't nice but I think Trump should STFD and STFU. He needs to stick to real estate deals and his apprentice show, things he does well.

  10. I agree with you, lady red, that Romney needs to quit being so cranky and petulant. Yes, that Baier interview was a walk in the park compared to what's coming from the True Believers.
