I had a friend in high school who was a huge fan of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and we would listen to it all the way through... late at night, completely baked...
My favorite song was Carpet Crawlers... I remember thinking I understood that somber tune quite perfectly.
I remember cold damp winter nights, with the window cracked and the lights off, record spinning... light another bong...
the carpet crawlers / heed their callers / you gotta get in to get out...
Melancholy and young, staring silently out into the night, the veil of icy mist... and bathed in regrets for mistakes not yet made, grief for losses not yet borne...
Yes, Bowie is pretty amazing all round. At 65 or otherwise. I admire that he made his career the way he wanted it. He mostly kept himself and his family out of the gossip/endless paparazzi crap. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. I read an interview he did several years ago and hadn't realised that he has lived in NYC for many years and considers it his home. Iman and their baby daughter were there on 9/11 less than a mile from ground zero.
Now I feel a Bowie Birthday music post coming on....
Thanks, Matt... takes me back...
