An Earthquake Up North

Even way over in Austria, I felt the political earthquake over in the True North (Strong and Free Edition)!

Not only did Harper’s Conservative Party take a majority, they became for the first time a truly national party, even taking seats in Toronto, of all places. Even Nunavut went Conservative!

The New Democratic Party became the official opposition, more than doubling its historic best in Parliament. Whether one agrees with their policy prescriptions or not, at least one can say that they are in fact offering a truly different position than that to be offered by Government and that will bode well for this Parliament.

The Liberals, Canada’s historic ruling party, a party which had for decades managed to intertwine its platform with positions and views thought to be Canadian in their very essence, the party that actually brought us the flag we all now instantly recognize, is reduced to a rump, a mere 34 seats, mostly in the far Atlantic. Even their leader lost his seat in Parliament!

The Bloc Quebecois was wiped out....IN QUEBEC. For the first time in over 20 years, Quebec separatism will have no voice in Ottawa. The federal party performed so badly it will lose its official status as a party.

Duceppe, the Quebecois leader, did the honorable thing and quickly resigned.

Ignatieff, the Liberal leader, proved to the world once again that actions speak louder than words and the basic lack of honor and uncalled-for levels of insufferable self-importance and arrogance that lurks in the heart of the modern global liberal by insisting he will stay on as party leader. May he lead the Liberals for a good, long time.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Harper and the Canadian people!

Well done!

  1. Glad to see that Canadians were immune to the campaign blandishments of a Hahvahd man.

He really did NOT come back for you!

Now, if only your neighbor to the south acts as much intelligently in its next national election.

  2. Dances, if only we can find a candidate as strong as Harper. Mitt Romney? Yuck! That's where the ruins of the Republican party is trying to steer us, and I don't like it one bit.
