The story goes that the final print of "Charlie Brown Christmas" was delivered to CBS at the last minute -- partly because it would be too late to do anything about that scene.
When Charles Shultz first wrote that scene, the producers asked if he really thought it was a good idea or if the time was right for him to put that kind of thing on prime-time TV.
He replied, "If not me, who? If not now, when?"
