Harlem Nocturne

The world is black and white.

You sit, uncomfortable in your new suit of nubbly wool, looking around at all the swells.  The guys with the greased hair and pencil moustaches, the dolls with slinky, sparkly dresses and spitcurls.

The cigarette girl comes by in her porter cap, sequined jacket and shorts.  The seams on her stockings are not quite straight, but your eyes follow them from the floor all the way up.  She feels your eyes on her, and looks at you over her shoulder, then winks.

You take another sip from your ice-cold vodka martini as the lights dim, the Duke's band comes in,

and you are swept away.

  2. Oooh, that is nice. And that photo goes so well with the tune.

I took a class on jazz in college. The professor, who had tried to get into the big bands in the 40's (but didn't quite make it) said he had long wanted to see Duke Ellington. He finally gotten tickets to see Ellington, but then he died.

If you would like an early rack and roll version, may I offer this one up by the Viscounts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk_InjADuAg&feature=related.

  4. That number was just right for a rainy Saturday night, Dances, I so enjoy your writing.

I was familiar with the tune but didn't know the name.

  6. I watched a bunch of versions of this last night, including the Viscounts, and it was pretty good.

  7. You would have heard Ellington in the classy nightclub with cigarette girls. You would have heard the Viscounts in the seedy joint in the rougher part of town.
