Terror in the English Countryside

This is awful. 12 confirmed dead (13 if you count the bastard who did it) 25 injured, 3 in critical condition.

  1. horrible, now imagine if they had the right to carry, if one of the victims had a gun and could defend him/herself then there would be less loss of life.

Gun free zones are like a huge sign saying "Criminals it's open season"

  2. Pamela, that's exactly what I was saying to Matt earlier.

  3. But that, of course, is not how the British authorities will see it, or attempt to deal with it.

There will be further crackdowns on firearms ownership in Britain, of course, and anti-rights groups in outher countries will try to use it as part of their propaganda for restrictive laws everywhere.

  4. Sad. DWT is correct; the authorities will spin this as a reason to tighten gun restrictions.

This SHOULD be a reason to issue MORE concealed weapons permits (do they even have those in England?).

  5. Beyond awful.

I have this tendency to want to try to make sense of things like this. Explanation is the modern litany. Perhaps we don't want to "understand" so much as we want our dopamine receptors up and working again.

I'm tempted to speculate about this guy and his mental state and motivations. For tonight at least I'm going to squelch that temptation. Just going to sit quietly for a moment with the dozen souls who have left all speculation behind.

  6. Pamela, in most instances of mass murder I would agree with you completely. But the simple fact that he kept it mobile, rather than being a crazed shooter moving through a building as the disarmed populace can only scream, beg and cower, makes it far less likely that he could have been stopped by a legally armed civilian.

That does not undercut your argument in the vast majority of mass-murder cases, but only in this one.

DWT, You idiot. Way to state the obvious, eh? Of COURSE the statists, the left-wing, the nanny-state proponents, and the elitist 'we're smarter that you' types all over the world will use this, as they use any incident that relates in any way to their agenda of rendering the rest of us to believe we are immature and idiotic and need them as parental figures.

Lewy, many years ago, when I was still relatively young and relatively healthy (sigh) I got a temp job as a UPS helper at Christmas time*.

I was, after a particularly interesting delivery opining to the driver about all the questions I had, and he told me 'in this business, if you can't stand not knowing, you will go crazy quickly'.

Unless the shooter left behind written details of his descent into murderous insanity, we will never know. I, for one, have enough on my plate and can't really afford to let it push me o'er the ever-nearing brink.

    * Remind me, sometime to tell you of my adventures as an over-aged UPS grunt-boy.
