ATHENS—Greek police clashed with youths in central Athens Wednesday as tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest at the Socialist government's austerity measures.
The strike has affected transport and public services, with government offices, schools and universities all shut and travel around the capital, Athens, disrupted. Athens International Airport was also closed as air traffic controllers joined the action, with no flights in and out of the country's airports. Train, bus and ferry services were canceled nationwide.
Banks are also expected to be affected while state hospitals will operate on skeleton staffing. No newspapers will be published because the journalists' union is taking part too.
The Greeks have dug themselves an enormous hole. Building a ladder and working their way OUT of the hole doesn't seem to be on anyone's "to do" list. Nope, they're too busy clawing each other's eyes out, spitting, and pulling hair (sound familiar?) Citizens are pouring into the streets, businesses are shuttering their doors, their Euro-buddies have kicked them to the Euro-kerb, and jobs are scarce...
The worker ants are screaming bloody murder:
We understand the difficulties in the economy, but the average worker can't give anything more. If the EU wants more measures, the rich and those who evade taxes should pay for it.
The Greek government, trying to save money by instituting austerity measures, has a different take on the situation:
So far, those measures include a freeze on civil-service wages, cuts in public-sector entitlements by 10% on average, a fuel tax hike and the closure of dozens of tax loopholes for certain professions—including some civil servants—who now pay less than their fair share in taxes.
Americans should take note of the goings-on in Greece, and begin calmly working to whittle down our own out-of-control entitlement programs. We should also take a hard look at the ratio/pay structure of government workers vs. private sector workers. If we don't roll up our sleeves and begin cleaning our house, room by room, our future could look a lot like....Greece.
And that's NOT a good thing.
Where do they think the money for all of thsoe entitlements comes from? They could tax "the rich" at 100% and there would still not be enough money to pay for all they have become to getting.
ReplyDeleteBesides that, if all the money from the rich goes towards taxes, then it will not go towards creating jobs and building the economy -- which would generate more in tax revenue in the long run anyway.
I am glad the US is beginning to wake up. I just hope it is in time to stop the people currently in power.
Oh man, things are getting ugly - Greece is playing the Nazi card.
ReplyDeleteIs it technically a violation of Godwin's law when actual Nazi crimes are involved?
Things are going to get a whole lot more "interesting" before this is over...
Lewy, things will get uglier...the ankle-biting over crap that transpired 65 years ago would be funny if weren't so pathetic.
ReplyDeleteThe scary thing is that the finger-pointing could escalate to saber-rattling as the economic situation deteriorates.
I'm still waiting for reparations for the potato famine.
ReplyDeleteBling me a M&Ms.
Florrie, LMAO! How's little PattyAnn?
ReplyDeleteShe was doing great up until last night. Tom was (supposedly) watching her while I took a soak and when I went into the dining room I found a little trail of poops :-(
ReplyDelete*sigh*
But, all in all, she is doing fine.
Florie....a guy's dilema...watch sports or watch puppy poop? Decisions decisions. :-))
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Are you using a crate for her when you or Tom are not conveniently able to watch her or be with her to play? With shepherds that is pretty much de rigor for the first 6 to 9 months or so. They don't like to poop where they sleep and relax....they prefer your dining room floor...or outside if you take them out as soon as you open up the crate. It establishes a pattern tht lasts a lifetime.
Just wondering.....
LOL, I think the sports definitely won out, Aridog!
ReplyDeleteYes, we crate trained Chaz and Molly. It's a very rigid schedule in which "free" (supervised) time is extended slowly as she gets used to the routine. I'm a real believer in that method, we never have accidents with Their Majesties.
I think part of the problem is that she was 14 weeks old when we got her from the breeder; she was never housebroken per se but just given access to a doggie door that went to an outside deck. She didn't know she was supposed to do her business on grass. She's a smart pup, it will just take a little longer...
Floranista, here is you M&Mses. Deyz don't come in no tatoh flavors doh.
ReplyDeletemw, lol!!
ReplyDeleteYou DID read about Epic Beard Man, didn't you?
