Wanna learn to play piano? Try these chord tutorials! :O)

My eldest son taught himself to play piano, and 6 years on he can play any classical piece and even compose symphonies using a neato little program that lets you write for each instrument and then puts it together. I woulda guess he practiced at least 2 hours per day (on his own - I never got involved or interfered in any way - this was HIS thing).
It occurred to me that my youngest two oughta give the piano a go now too, even though I recognize that not everyone will develop a passion for it the way the 18 year old did. At least they'll be able to pick their way through simple songs though. Youtube has tons of simple piano lessons for playing songs - as opposed to learning music theory and learning in the classical manner, which could come later if the student was that interested. So - FUN! I am going to try it too. Here's one I found that is nice and easy - this week, 4 chords over and over 'til we can play them blindfolded. Next week the same....
Tutorial Number One, The Basics...
Learning to play chords on the piano will take far less time than learning to read music. It is easier to improvise using chords on piano than it would be to try to use individual notes while you sing your songs.

  1. Maybe Fay should watch this. I can make noise on the guitar and she can play piano.

Piano is interesting to learn music on, as it is so graphic in it's layout. You can see the sharps/minors. You can see half steps and whole steps.

I will watch this later. My brain is too tired to absorb anything right now.

  2. I just watched the first few minutes. The guy cracks me up! "We start with C. Don't ask why! That's philosophy! Philosophy is down the hall!"

  3. Yeah I kinda liked that part too, LadyR :O)
And it was good he said that, because that IS the kind of dumb question I would have asked :OP

I figure we will practice those 4 chords for maybe 10-15 minutes per day. I hadn't know you could do those variations on each chord - now that was a little too complicated for me yet, so will be sticking with the simple chord.

  4. Hello there! This looks like it would be good for anyone wanting to learn any instrument. I haven't had a piano lesson in around 20 years, and I'm around 10 years on with the fiddle, but I use the chords I learned on piano every time I play.

So if you relearned the piano, how many instruments would you know how to play?
