Book Thread

What are you reading?

My current read: I'm only a third of the way through and I am so appalled that I'm speechless. It's very well researched and I highly recommend it; if you have Prime, you can read the kindle version for free right now.

Next up is this one, also free on Prime:

Well written fiction has been hard to find. Most, if not all, Amazon "picks" are by women of little talent. Most of them would have flunked out of my 7th grade writing class. Some are not bad, but then they HAVE to interject some social justice BS (I suspect at the demand of their publisher) but it ruins the story.

Any recommendations that don't cost double-digits for a kindle book that I won't officially own? Or, if it's a GREAT book, I don't mind paying for the dead tree version!

  1. Herman Wouk's books on WWII come highly recommended by my parents.

  2. I like Steinbeck but for some reason paperback copies of his books seem to cost almost as much as a Gutenberg Bible. I did check out the Pearl from the library but I was not able to make my way all the way through it.

Another book I did finish of his was a rather unusual one. I don't know the name of it, but it was a non-fiction book about the selection and training of bomber crews during WWII.

Speaking of of bombers and WWII, the last book I read was A Higher Call, about the German fighter pilot who escorted the damaged American bomber out of danger. Most of the book was about the German. The parts about the American almost seemed an intrusion, oddly enough.

I should read more. Part of my problem is that if I am into a book, I just can't put it down. It is almost an anathema to me to put a book down except at the end of a chapter. That is a bad thing when the chapters are long and you have to go to work the next thing.

    1. A Higher Call goes in my tsundoku.

I learned that rather excellent word – anybody who reads anything has a tsundoku – from a very cool guy I met last year. Not uncomfortable at all saying he's head and shoulders smarter than me, and it's been a pleasure learning from him. Sadly he has difficulty keeping his sh!t together. Go figure.

His circle of friends found need to come together for him last year, because reasons. I might have more to say later in email.
