Election Day Open Thread
Post your predictions, preferences, favorite long-shots and/or thoughts. I'm looking at the Rhode Island gubernatorial race and several senate seats. Hoping Georgia and Louisiana will both get a majority so we won't have to wait for a run-off.
Voting machine irregularities today in Virginia Beach, VA and Anne Arundel Co., MD. In early voting the same thing happened in Moline, IL and Rock Island County, MD. The thing they all have in common? All votes cast for republican candidates displayed as a vote for the democrat candidate.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbot's campaign has been alerted that at least one machine in Bexar Co., TX has omitted his name entirely from the ballot.
They are just trying to correct for all the racists out there who would have the nerve to vote Republican.
I wonder why the government has not decided to let government employees to vote for the people to save them the trouble. I am sure that would guarantee a 100% turnout.
I was able to email my ballot. They sent me a way to track it. I will have to check that out.
That's a good idea, Matt. Tom & I are both somewhat concerned whether our vote is even being counted (you know all the "issues" we've had here in WA). I'll have to do that next time.
We voted this morning. It was raining and cold, and the fire house that is our voting place was packed (and cold!). I know we live in the boonies, but only two voting machines was NOT enough. We were there about an hour. I hope the high turnout is good news!
I'm not able to offer a prediction which isn't biased by cynicism. I wasn't able to vote without cynicism either.
Since I live in a one party state and the Republican candidates were hopeless, I barely mustered the resolve to vote at all. I did, mostly to vote against spending initiatives. And also to legalize MJ. Figured one less reason for cops to kick down doors was a good thing.
I figure that the Senate control will still be undecided by bedtime tonight, and the Dems will figure out a way to steal it over the next couple days. The more brazen, the better, so as to instruct the masses and the peripheral elite as to who holds the cards.
I think Tom Cotton is going to put Pryor away decisively. He was up as much as 13 points recently (in-state poll) and the latest poll (PPP, dem polling outfit) on Nov. 1 had him up 8 points.
But even if it's only a 2 point win, I won't breathe easily until his has a W next to his name (and that he wins by a large enough margin that Pryor can't challenge the results).
Roberts has hung on to win in Kansas and Ernst is winning in Iowa. The senate goes to the republicans.
Obama has called for a meeting with congress on Friday. I am willing to bet that's when he announces he's going to use his pen & phone for executive actions - since he is incapable of leading and working with the other side.
FNC just called Iowa for Joni Ernst. So it's official now. There's still NC as you mentioned Matt, that may go for Tillis and Alaska. They could really solidy their lead with those additional 2 and then Louisiana next month.
Yet Juan Williams couldn't admit it was a "wave" of victories for the republicans. He's never been the same ever since Obama called him and other pundits to the White House after his 2012 election. He's lost all of his objectivity which I really admired.
Anything to help out, lewy. I have not watched anything, I have just been following things online. I can get msnbc and can; Fox is in a premium package.
S&P 500 futures up about 5 points as the news has come in. Market likes it.
Interestingly gold is down in London trading. One way to make sense of this: market has more faith in US economy -> more likely Fed can raise rates -> gold is less desirable investment (pays no interest).
We felt the same when it passed here in WA lewy. That said, there are definitely negatives with the legalization although I would smoke it again if I have medical reasons to do so.
Damn, I didn't realize it until now (I've been at work all night) but in Arkansas ALL our national senators and reps are now repubs! Plus the governership! Plus, at my local level, the pubs swept almost every race! It's crazy...I'm still pinching myself. I never ever thought this would happen.
Late results have Dan Sullivan winning in Alaska. I don't know why the pundits haven't called it, 100% of the vote is in and he won by 3 1/2 + points so I can't imagine it can be contested. I think they will add Louisiana next month after the runoff; Landieu consistently polled behind Cassidy in a head-to-head battle. Virginia margin is <1% so I guess that will go to an automatic recount. I'm really hoping Gillespie can win.
The comments by Obama are ridiculous in the presser he's having right now. He's trying to spin that this wasn't a bellweather on his policies (as he made clear it WAS just days before the election); he's suggesting that since the 5 states that had a minimum wage boost on the ballots all passed it that somehow that's an endorsement of his "policies". The man is a pathological liar. I'd bet the house he doesn't call on Ed Henry for a question...
The tide has definitely turned against Obama with the fawning, obsequious media. He just cracked a joke about how tough Major Garrett is on him and NOT ONE person in the press room laughed.

McConnell has won and Ed Gillespie is doing surprising well in Virginia. Dana Perino said he'd do well, I hope he can pull it off...
ReplyDeleteYou have my sympathies, lewy. Our state is the same, pretty much hopeless for us conservatives. We always vote, however.
We're watching the Pryor/Cotton race closely. Pryor ran tons of ads, and they were good. He had a lot more money than Cotton. It'll be a close race.

Corey Gardener just called for the Colorado race. That gives us 4 seats pickup so far.

Scott Brown lost in NH but he put on a great fight.
On a positive note, John Kasich and Scott Walker won gubernatorial in OH and WI.
