  7. Happy New Year, everyone. Fay and I had the best new year in a long time. We decided to treat ourselves to two nights in a ritzy hotel in downtown Vancouver.

We went to dinner at our favorite restaurant. We know to ask the owner if there is as great wine that is not on the wine list. He made a suggestion, and we were not disappointed. When we were ready to leave, I went over to say good bye to the owner. He said he wanted to buy us a drink. So I called Fay and the three of us went over to the bar. The owner got three liqueur glassed and he brought out a bottle of Frangelico. We drank a toast.

We went back to the hotel, planning on just going straight to our room – but we decided to check out the bar first. The concierge told that a band would be starting in a few minutes and that we would have to pay a cover charge if we stayed. Although we intended on just having a drink and then going up to our room, the band was so good that we stayed.

During the band’s break, the guitar player was walking by and I started talking to him. After he left, the singer walked by and I started talking to her. She introduced herself and asked our names.

After the break they got back to playing. Just before midnight, everyone was given a glass of bubbly. At midnight the bartender came over and clinked glasses with us. The festivities only went until about 12:30. When the band finished, we went over to say good night to them.

    A really fine evening.
