Mine Explosion In West Virginia

Just breaking:  A coal mine has exploded, killing 6 men.  21 men are still missing.

UPDATE:  25 dead and 4 missing.  :(

According to Fox News:

State mining official says six people are dead and 21 are unaccounted for at Massey Energy after an explosion occurred Monday at an underground coal mine.
The blast happened at the Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston. The company did not provide details on the extent of the damage.
The mine is operated by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co.
Mine emergency crews from the State Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training were headed to the scene.
In 1998, a worker at the mine was killed when a support beam collapsed, dumping bags of cement mix and other materials onto the man, according to a report from the federal Mine Safety & Health Administration. Federal investigators blamed poor welding and construction.
In 2001, another worker at the mine died after a portion of roof fell in on him.

Please keep these miners in your thoughts and prayers.

  1. Hmmm, I tried the "read more", but it didn't work. Let me go back in and try it again.

  2. Okay, that worked. I pasted the code into "compose" mode instead of "HTML". Duh.

  3. We were just talking about the mine disaster of a couple years back :-(

We are praying for the trapped men and their families.

  4. :-( That's sad news. I'll be praying for the families.

(p.s. The site's looking great, lady red!)

  5. Thanks Lyana! It's been a fun community effort. :)

  6. Awful news. Things we take for granted (like electricity) sometimes come at a terrible price.

  7. Hey Lyana! How's the baby doing?

  8. I see that, lady red! It's a very nice little spot (populated by some of my favorite internet people :-)), and I'll pop by as I can.

Florie, the littlest guy is getting so big! He's just turned one, and is very close to walking - not so much of a baby anymore. How are you all holding up?

  9. Oh, wow. Just saw the update - that's heartbreaking. I can't remember another mine accident (in my lifetime) in the US with that many fatalities. :-(

  10. I can't get over that he's already a year, how time flies.
