Years ago I was at a precinct caucus and I was having a discussion with someone about using the term "black" instead of "African-American." I said that if the worst problem a group has is whether people use whatever term the group wants used as opposed to a term that group finds offensive -- even if that was a term the group previously told us they wanted us to use, then the group must not have many serious problems.
The person I was talking with, who was very overweight, said that if he would be offended if someone called him "fatso."
I replied that I did not recall anyone proclaiming, "I'm fatso and I'm proud." I did tell him that I DID remember people standing up and proclaiming, "I'm black and I'm proud."
The purpose of such games is to keep one side perpetually on the defensive. I think, however, that that ship has sunk.
Just so you know, I was sipping my skinny latte at the same time I was LOLing. Not.
ReplyDeleteI'll never set foot in another Starbucks my entire life.
Although I do have an unused gift card given to me by a client.
DeleteCan I donate it to a food bank?
Walk into Starbucks.
DeleteTell the first obvious street zombie how wonderful it is that Starbucks is giving them run of the place. Hand them your gift card.
Walk out.
Street zombie is positively reinforced to hang out at Starbucks even more.
And don't forget to tell Schultz you're welcome. ;)
"That is the f**king default setting!"
ReplyDeleteWell, at least it should be.
