When I was a senior in high school I was in the play Flowers for Algernon. For those of you who are not familiar with the play (which was made into the movie Charly in 1968), it is the story of a mentally handicapped man who undergoes surgery that makes him a genius – albeit temporarily.
Charly worked in a bakery where he was a friend with the other employees. The other employees showed their friendship by teasing him and playing jokes on him. Once Charly became smarter those signs of friendship no longer worked, and the other employees stopped being Charly’s friends.
In 2012, the A&E Network premiered a program called Duck Dynasty. This is a reality program featuring a family from the bayou country of Louisiana. If you have ever watched a reality show, you know that each episode the producers manufacture some sort of asinine controversy between the people on the show. While I have never watched Duck Dynasty, I have read that the Robertson family never went for that. Instead, they showed a close-knit family that held to traditional values. The producers would bleep out words to make it sound as though the Robertson used foul language -- which they do not. Recently, the Roberstons were told to tone down the mention of Jesus as it was offensive to muslims. They refused. Now the big brouhaha is that the patriarch of the family took a traditional stand against homosexuality during an interview for GQ magazine. As a result, Phil Robertson has been suspended, if not fired, from the program.
I cannot help but think that as long as the Robertsons played dumb little Charlys, at whom the enlightened elite could laugh, there would be no problem. Instead, however, the Roberstons upset things by sticking to their values. Rather than allow themselves to be laughed at, the Robertsons struck a chord with many people.
Last weekend at work, I was displaying some sunglasses that were on sale. Among them were the Duck Commander sunglasses. I did not realize how popular that program, or the people on it, was. One man who looked closely at those sunglasses was wearing a Duck Dynasty hat. I can’t tell you how many times I heard people saying that it was “cool” that there were Duck Commander sunglasses.
The left is very open-minded to opinions, as long as those opinions follow the party line. If an opinion does not, then the person expressing that opinion must be destroyed. It is time that this nonsense ended.
Bravo Matt, excellent post.
ReplyDeleteI echo what Fay said. I'm glad you posted about this, Matt, and I think your analogy is spot-on.
ReplyDeleteI'm so tired of the faux (and selective) outrage from LGBT. I haven't seen DD but I know it is wildly popular and saw one of the family on The Five several weeks ago. He was down to earth, funny and smart. Here is - in part - the statement just released by his family:
" Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.
I have no idea what this program is about and had never heard of it until this week, but I happened to see Prof. Jacobson at Legal Insurrection had a post about this, echoing your thoughts pretty closely
ReplyDeleteThe Left started the culture war, won it resoundingly, and now they're roaming the country shooting the wounded survivors.
ReplyDeleteI do not think the left won the culture war. They may have though so because that is what the news and entertainment media says, but the left was counting unhatched chickens.
DeleteConsequently, they have overstepped their bounds. The things they are doing are making conservatives stand up and say, "No more Mr. nice guy," and driving those in the middle over to the right.
As we have discussed before, it is not conservatism that loses elections for the Republican Party. Conservatism is what allows Republicans to make great gains. Once those gains have been made, though, the RINOs take over again and squander the gains.
As with Mark Twain, reports of conservatism's death have been greatly exaggerated.
I do not think the left won the culture war.
DeleteThe Left may have a smaller ground force, but they have air superiority. And strategic bombing capability.
Great post Matt.
ReplyDeleteI DO watch Duck Dynasty occasionally. It's funny, and kids can watch it too. It's wholesome. Their business is an American success story. Their values closely mirror that of most Christians I know; heck, their values mirror that of most PEOPLE I know, regardless of faith.
I knew at some point there would be a straw that broke the cultural camel's back. It appears that this is it.
I caught a bit of O'Reilly last night, and he was a complete jackass. He pontificated to his audience about Christianity re: homosexuality. He's a buffoon, and may have alienated a lot of his audience. I turned him off. I'm done.
I don't care about teh gayz one way or the other, but I'm truly sick to death of being told what to think and say, who I can read, and what I can watch for entertainment. It appears that I'm in good company. :)
Interesting tidbit: I read this morning that Phil Robertson has a masters degree from Louisiana Tech. Heh heh! That should dampen the left's powder!
Matt, using Charly as an analogy was brilliant.

DeleteHow much more do you need to know to discover that this show, its actors and its producers are all con people?
How many shows (Moonshiners, Ax Men, Swamp People, et al...) do we need to get it that the producers think "hyuck yuk folks" are funny. Al Capp did all that decades ago, and then it was supposed to be funny, not "reality." Today is a liberal elite mockery, pure and simple. Do you really think they appreciate fly over or swamp folks? Please.
There's always a Grinch at every celebration. As for the Duck Dynasty hullabaloo...in my not very humble opinion what-so-ever, it is ALL bullshit, both sides, contrived to promote the 99% bullshit show itself. Everybody wins, A&E and the Robertsons. If they really are so fucking thick they think the "realtiy" is "realtiy" about them, then they are just as stupid as the A&E executives think they are and want them to be....e.g., it sells tickets to the freak show. P.T. Barnum would jhave approved. I've spent time with Cajuns, Creoles, and other bayou dwellers...and NONE of them resembled this clown show in any way what-so-ever. The empahsis on "frog eatin'" should be your first clue. Hey, they had to find something different to distinguish it from "Swamp People" on Discovery Channels, right?
ReplyDeletePlease tell me what a "suspension" or "Hiatus" is for a show that the next full seeason is already in the can? That is also running a re-run marathon this week?
Ou, ah, yowee...I've shovel better manure from the bull pen at the barn.
Now you want to see a really really 101% bullshit show, watch Tru-TV's "Hard Core Pawn" when it is about Detroit's American Jewelry and Loan pawn shop. It is 50% fat foul mouthed Negro women behaving badly, another 25% jive ass Negro men without a clue trying to be bad ass, and the remainder assorted freaks that don't really exist except in the minds of the shows producers or the shops moron operators. It is 101% a set of manure riper than a year old fertilizer pile.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet way too many people think this is "reality" in Detroit. Sorry to burst anyone's balloon, but no even close. Yeah, it is a tough town, but virtually no one frpom that pawn shop show would or could last a week here if they acted even half like they do on screen.
It's like "Breking Bad" .... I watched about a dozen episodes and then quit...no one like Walt, his weezy associates, would be allowed to live in the world they were portraying. I know at bit about that world. Meth is not a secret recipe and the Mexicans make it faster than Walt ever could.
Why do people watch these shows and "believe?"
Oh, yeah...Merry Christmas everyone. I just came back form a very happy Mass that featured children for the most part, in Mexican Town, where I usually go for services if I go at all. My best friend is the Priest. He keeps trying to civilize me.
ReplyDeleteYes, Merry Christmas everyone.
