Eric Blair is Laughing

Last week, Lewy helpfully pointed out that:

-- topless harpies screaming slogans = ordinary women fighting the good fight

-- traditional women asking for the ways of their mothers and grandmothers be respected = extremists

We can now add more, thanks to the ruthlessly reliable voice of the new age, the BBC:

Swiss voters have overwhelmingly backed a controversial move to tighten asylum restrictions amid a spike in the number of refugees in the country. Almost 80% of voters approved changes made to the asylum law last September, final results of a referendum said.

-- measure supported by 80% of a given population = controversial.

  1. Kevin, you're so sneaky. I thought "who the heck is Eric Blair?". Ha!

This is a very interesting event in Switzerland. I read a little more about it and was really shocked to find out they accept twice as many asylum seekers as Europe (one for every 332 inhabitants as opposed to one asylum seeker for every 625 inhabitants in Europe!).

I loved this part, and it should give us all hope:

Human rights groups and left wing parties gathered enough signatures to force Sunday's referendum, in a bid to get the government measures withdrawn, warning that they could lead to discrimination.

Then they held the vote. 80% of Swiss voters decided to keep the new restrictions.

    I can hear solus saying...schadenfreude ensues. :-)

This kind of reminds me of the failed union recall efforts in WI.

    Sometimes things turn out well.

  2. Why the hell are the asylum seekers heading to Switzerland? I can't afford to settle in Switzerland - how can they? Oh, yeah, right. They can afford it because they're broke.

    1. Can you imagine the life lottery a broke Eritrean hits winning this visa?

Of course, I *know* of what I speak in this regard: they don't appreciate it, don't really want anything to do with Switzerland and are entitled assholes.

One thing that I've found to be exactly true is this:

If you have 50 gallons of wine and add a drop of shit to it, you have 50 gallons of shit.

If you have 50 gallons of shit and add a drop of wine to it, you have 50 gallons of shit.

      THAT is diversity.

  4. I used Blair instead of Orwell because, frankly, I'm getting tired of seeing the name.

In any case, Huxley was more correct than Blair.

    1. Brave New World and 1984 - both apply to our modern world.

The quantum mechanical concept of "superposition" is useful in understanding how exactly this is true. You know, is it a wave, or a particle? It's both at the same time...
