That is my idea of a Christmas song. Such music, to me, needs to be the best the person performing can offer. If it is an honest bluegrass, or a brilliant operetic performance is fine with me. It is the fact that the performer is giving his or her best, not just selling records.
This reminds me of the first radio station where I worked. I started on the Sunday morning shift, which included the religious music program. I guess I am something of a traditionalist and like a beautiful offerings in religious music. So I found all the albums such as the Morman Taberncal Choir and the like, as opposed to the recordings made just to sell records. One listener -- whom I had talked to before -- called and said "The music is good, I think."
I don't care what the style, as long as it is made as an honest offering -- not just crass commercialism.
Instant chills - thank you, thank you! I love this song - I grew up with a mom who is a classically trained vocalist and had a breath-taking lyrical high soprano voice. She was a little thing who could blow the doors off; they usually turned the mic off for her. Hearing her sing "Oh Holy Night" nearly every year at our church's Christmas Eve candle light service always brought me to tears.
Oh - and for suggestions - anything by Josh Groban. :-)
And might I suggest this rendering of Mary's Magnificat? The poster kindly put up the lyrics too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E48tDob8jtM&playnext=1&list=PLEA956F84144BD8CB&index=54
That was simply beautiful. I love tenors, was that Julio Englacias (sp)? The soprano was also amazing.
I too love Midnight Clear, lady red, as well as Greensleeves. Well, there is just so much lovely Christmas music to choose from, I'm glad you're going to post more, Fay. Thanks for finding this gem.
This is my favourite Christmas hymn. I just found this version and it gives me goosebumps.

It's Placido Domingo and Charlotte Church florrie, and I am glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks, Fay; I knew he looked vaguely familiar (from The 3 Tenors).
