For lewy and lady red and lurkers and Floyd fans. My favourite Floyd song as performed by Van Morrison.
Update:
Because I love random Brits doing Floyd better than Floyd, here is one of my all time fav Brit vocalists doing Hey You at the same concert.
Paul Carrack, I met him once. Not sure why he never became a huge star.
I. Love. Paul. Carrack.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this a dozen times (we own the DVD!). He has such a terrific, soulful voice.
I will always prefer hearing the Pink Floyd originals over covers but Paul's version is VERY good.
And seeing that the creepy Roger Waters was the only Floyd member at the Berlin Wall concert...well...SOMEONE had to shine. And it was Paul and Tim Curry.
ReplyDeleteSinead O'Conner and Van Morrison were also GREAT. Ditto The Band.
Fay, I do believe we are sisters. I just read the post again and realized that our favorite PF song is one and the same.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking to myself here :-)
ReplyDeleteNighty night!
Cool vids Fay! I've never heard of Paul Carrack until now. His voice reminds me a little of Phil Collins.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to pick a favorite PF tune, but the two above are in my top ten. :)
lady red, chances are you've heard Paul Carrack's incredible voice as lead vocalist on a few songs. Although he had moderate solo success with a couple of songs in the late 1980s (One Good Reason, Don't Shed a Tear) he's probably best know as the lead singer on Squeeze's "Tempted" as well as on the Mike + the Mechanics song "Silent Running". He was also in a group called Ace, which had a hit back on the mid-70s with the song "How Long".

ReplyDeleteHe's one of my faves as well. I was a huge Squeeze fan back in high school (okay- I still am). I remember when I first discovered that Paul was lead singer on both Squezze's "Tempted" and the Ace song "How Long". This was long before Al Gore's success with "The Internet" so I had a tough time finding out more about the long-gone group Ace, and spend many hours searching record store for an Ace album. When my birthday rolled around, my friend presented me the long-sought treasure... titled, ironically, "An Ace Album". (Ace fans- if there are any outh there- will correctly note that the actual album title is "Five-A-Side", however the front cover simple says "An Ace Album".)
Anyhow, I've been fortunate enough to see Paul sing both solo and with Squeeze. Perhaps my favorite Squeeze show with Paul singing lead was back in the early 90s at a cozy little venue called The Stony Pony in Asbury Park, NJ (at least I think the show was the Stony Pony.) Anyhow, it was a really low stage- only about 2 or 3 feet high- and we managed to get a place right next to Paul, who was in the front corner playing drums (yes- drums, not keyboards). It was a excellent show and also featured vocal by Aimee Mann. We even got to hang out and chat with them all for a bit after the show. Good times...
One last note... Squeeze has recently released and album called "Spot the Difference" which features a bunch of song which they have re-recorded (as close to the originals as possible). The even got Paul Carrack to sing Tempeted again. Apparently they have an ongoing contractural dispute with whatever the record company is that holds the rights to their songs, so they decided to record new versions that wouldn't be bound to the original agreement. I'm sure the new recordings wouldn't supplant the originals, but it's still an interesting idea. I don't have the album (yet) but I did preview the songs on amazon; they're pretty good covers.
ReplyDelete(apologies if I've posted this already)
Wow, Alphie, you are a man after my own heart!
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge Squeeze fan and "Tempted" has a place in my heart that I can't ever explain to anyone.
I met Paul Carrack when he was on tour with Mike & The Mechanics. I have a very flimsly family connection with Genesis and Mike, that's how I got back stage passes.
Hey, a flimsy family connection is still a connection, right? Very cool, Fay.
ReplyDeleteFor the last 24 hours, the whole place has felt like the opening line of this song
