I got to thinking earlier this week. The grand prize is 500$. I think 500$ would be a good sized donation to give to Soldier's Angels. The second prize is a plasma tv. I think a plasma tv would be a great donation for Fisher House.
I would let myself be weighed for Soldier's Angels. And I think I can work hard enough to make a good showing and possibly win. But I need your help...
She needs our advice and our hearty encouragement to win this competition, so lets break out our pompoms and give her all we've got!
GO AFW!!!!!
My best advice for weight loss: don't eat after dinner. Not a cookie. Not a potato chip. Not even a single solitary M&M. Your tummy might grumble as you're nodding off, but it's worth it!
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting for you, AFW! You can do it!
I'm still crying about not getting fried chicken for six weeks and now you tell me not to eat after dinner either?

Good luck, afw! I'm trying to take off some pounds too. I think the suggestion about not eating after dinner is very good. Or set a time, like nothing after 8:00.
ReplyDeleteSnacks are good as long as they aren't sugary, my doc said to have a protein with a carb for a snack, but to keep portions small.
I can go all day without eating, it's the evenings that do me in...
Anyhoo, good luck! I'm rooting for you!!
You do NOT want to see with pom poms.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you what, how 'bout I pick up pom poms and do the cheerleader thing if you DON'T win. That should scare you into winning this by a mile. :-)
What I have heard for a long time is eat a big (healthy) breakfast, then cut down as the day goes along.
I have confidence in you. I am greatly impressed with the strength of the women I know here and their ability to have a winning record on things that are important to them.
AFW, however this turns out, I am willing to help match/replace it in your name.
You go girl!
ReplyDelete"AFW, however this turns out, I am willing to help match/replace it in your name."
ReplyDeleteOkay, Matt. I'm with you. And you too, of course, AFW.
Well, low four figures anyway. I ain't rich.
OMG - Matt and Luther, you made me CRY! And just for the record, I don't cry. It wasn't really crying, it was more like some sniffles because I haven't dusted recently.
ReplyDeleteOMG.
Seriously.
That kind of generosity just takes my breath away. Literally, even.
I'll have pictures up of my weigh in tomorrow on SpouseBUZZ. In honor of my "team", I'm going to wear AFG's old shirt from his 2003 Iraq deployment. It says "Who's Your Baghdaddy" on the back.
You guys have me reeling.
Matt & Luther, you guys are the tops!
ReplyDelete"It says "Who's Your Baghdaddy" on the back."
ReplyDeleteI love that!
AFW, it sounds like you like exercise and you've got a good fitness program - this is half the battle.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't seen it, take a look at this article on cardio workouts by J.D. Johannes. fwiw what he writes is very consistent with my experience losing weight.
Also: no sugar / bread / pasta and such. None zilch nada. Here's the secret: it won't be horrible for the whole time. It will only be horrible for a couple days as your body adjusts.
Sugar truly is a kind of poison and your body knows this; if you listen past the "nom nom nom yum yum yum" there is a faint "yuck" signal in there as well. In a couple weeks you can walk past the pastry case and not really even want any.
There is a reflex people have when they're trying to avoid things they don't want to eat and then encounter them: the reflex to become tense; the expression of their will being tested. Eventually the stress from all the tension builds to the point where the body chemistry becomes ever more susceptible to the sugar crave. Negative feedback.
What worked for me is to learn to relax: see the donut, breath deep, relax, get in touch with that part of me that really doesn't want the donut, and go on. The experience of taking the encounter with temptation to relax and reduce stress leaves you feeling good and diminishes cravings: positive feedback.
Don't cut out all fat; keep some good fat - it modulates blood sugar and keeps you from the ravenous hunger that ruins everything.
Sorry for all the blah blah.
"It's better to blah blah than to nom nom" - Churchill.
lewy - I've been doing boxing and kickboxing workouts since November and there's been a big difference in my body already. Not enough of one, but it's a start. Plus, I just like whacking things. It feels good (your friendly neighborhood Neo-con Warmonger right here).
ReplyDeleteAnd food truly is my weak spot. I get excellent results doing a "caveman" diet, but I've never been able to stick to one permanently. I love pasta. LOVE pasta.
I've discovered shiritaki noodles, though, so maybe that will help. (Note to everyone: Don't eat shiritaki noodles unless you are not leaving your house the next day or will be in close, close proximity to a bathroom. A bathroom with some kind of white noise going on.)
And bring on the blah blah blah! I'm a giant wuss, and I'm scared to death I'm going to give up!
ReplyDeleteHow embarrassing!
AFW. You have my complete and total confidence. If a 'will' has any touch of truth. That's you.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with lewy on the sugar aspect. Tom & I both love our sweets but gave up sugar a couple months ago in the interest of losing weight. When we had some treats over the holidays, we both felt ill. Now when I get a sugar craving I have a Breyer's fruit bar - no sugar.
ReplyDeleteIt's bread that is the hardest for me to cut back on. I love pasta too, afw. Some things we just HAVE to have, eh?

ReplyDeleteO-M-G
I think I'll pass on the shitiraki noodles.
Matt and Luther, you guys are awesome!
ReplyDeleteAFW - You are already doing the most important part - exercise will not only change your metabolism, it will help to reduce your appetite (at least it did mine).
ReplyDeleteIn any case, good luck to you. If anyone I know can do this, it would be you.
