Merry Christmas from KC!

Our friend KC over at Naked Writing tells us how she really feels about "Holiday" greetings:

You know that Christian holiday that almost all Christians celebrate in the month of December?
You know the one that is celebrated around the 25th of December each and every year?
The one I am not allowed to call by name anymore for fear of upsetting the non-Christians AND Christians of the world and being labelled “intolerant?”
The one that countless of songs were written about that fill the airwaves this time of year but we cannot say by name?
The one that has no longer any religious significance worldwide and yet, I still cannot wish you a Merry one?

Go read it all.

  1. Bravo, I couldn't agree more.

Here is what I sent to our County Manager after receiving a flier for "Holday Tree Recycling" in our latest garbage bill.

    Re: "Holiday" Tree Recycling

    Hello,

I really appreciate the enclosures we get with our bill but was very unhappy to see the one for "Free Holiday Tree Recycling". Whoever designed this flier should know that it's a Christmas tree, not a holiday tree. In the politically correct attempt to avoid offending an imaginary person, whoever designed the flier is actually offending hundreds (if not thousands, I don't know your customer base) of people.

I sincerely hope Thurston County rethinks this before next Chrismas.

    Thank you,

  3. If people wish me 'happy holidays' I usually respond with 'I hope you have a joyous Christmas' just to be sure it stands from what others may say.

If they want to be offended, let'em.

  4. Standing ovation! Excellent rant, KC!

I understand the reason behind saying "happy holidays". It's difficult to simply look at a person and "see" their religious beliefs, and no one wants to offend. However, I've come to the conclusion that if it offends someone...TOO BAD.

There has been a mighty effort to erase Christmas while keeping the other religious holidays intact. It's caused me to dig in my heels these past few years, and wish EVERYONE a Merry Christmas. To my delight, no one has been offended at all.

Holidays are at their best when the joy is shared. Merry Christmas!

  5. My aunt explained to me a long time ago that taking offense is a personal choice. The person dishing the words, regardless of what they said, has no control, even if they attempt to control, they have NO control over whether or not YOU, as the receiver, chooses to take offense. And that I am not responsible for that.

    I never forgot those words.
I to understand why we say happy holidays.
    But its not holidays.
    It's Christmas.
And when its another holiday, its THAT holiday.
    So on so forth.
Nothing frustrate me more than being asked to circumvent who I am just to appease the others. Been there, done that to detrimental effects.
No going there again. Thus my rant.

  6. If someone is going to be offended by a heartfelt greating reflecting on a season of love and peace, that is their problem -- not mine.
