Guess Who Said The Following

A little contest: Read the following comments, made yesterday and reported today in one of the world's leading newspapers. They are all direct quotes. The answer is in the comments!

“There is a difference between a military mission and the aspiration for the long-term plans for the country. What we want is a stable enough Afghanistan, able to look after its own security so we can leave without the fear of it imploding ... But let’s be clear — it’s not going to be perfect.”

“We are not in Afghanistan for the sake of the education policy in a broken 13th-century country. We are there so the people of [his nation] and our global interests are not threatened.”

“National security is the focus now. We are not a global policeman. We have obligations to deal with poverty and human rights but that is no different in Afghanistan from dozens of other countries. We shouldn’t deploy [his nation's] troops unless there are overwhelming humanitarian emergency considerations or a national security imperative.”

“There is a lack of urgency and understanding in this country about the threat posed by Iran.”

“They are engaging in an enrichment programme way beyond that which can be justified by a civil nuclear programme.”

“You’ve had Ahmadinejad talking about wiping Israel off the face of the map. People here may think that’s hyperbole but there are people in Israel who remember the last time someone said ‘We’re going to wipe you off the face of the map’ and had a damn good try at it. "

“This is our first post-Cold War Government.”

  1. Answer: New British Defense Minister, Dr. Liam Fox.

Britain may or may not be worse off than America, but it does cause me no small amount of joy to see that it can stil produce a minister of state who speaks sense, plainly and directly.
