My Poor Austrian Students

Over the past few years, while working in a major European capital, I had the good fortune to work alongside local graduate student interns in American studies and history programs. In addition to their nearly flawless English, they brought to the table a deep understanding of American history and culture, our institutions and our role in the world. They brought to their work the same sort of enthusiasm one often encounters in American students intellectually enthralled with Europe. They were highly intelligent, motivated and clearly, by any standard, well educated.

Which was why it was so interesting to note that when it came to internal American matters, they found themselves at a loss. When an event occurred, and they plugged it into their matrix of knowledge, they came up with a conclusion that was almost always badly wrong. Concerned about this, we spent many hours over good beer discussing why. How could a person so well educated in our history, language and culture fail to understand the significance of contemporary events?

The answer, of course, is race. If you’re American, you already knew that. How can foreign students be expected to learn of matters of which we will not speak, not at all? The current Attorney General of the United States is almost never right about anything, but surely he was hitting that nail square on the head when he announced: 1) that on matters of race, the United States is a “nation of cowards;” and 2) that when it comes to his own view, when he says “my people” he doesn’t mean “Americans”, but “blacks.”

I could do nothing but feel sorry for them. All that effort! All that learning! All those years! And, despite it all, unable to answer even the most basic questions of American life correctly, when the right answers are available to the most simple among us.

Pop quiz!

Why do nearly all European-American professionals who live in the District of Columbia plan a move out of the District some time between the birth and the fourth year of their first child’s life?

Why do middle-class European-Americans commute an hour or more to work, from neighborhoods with sharply higher housing costs, when more inexpensive housing is available much closer to their jobs?

Why does a Latino man shooting and killing a young Black man grip the entire nation’s attention, including remarks from the President, when dozens of such events occur without similar results?

Oh, it’s easy to sit back in your red, white and blue chair and think such questions easy-peasy, but put yourself in those European students’ shoes for a moment. How would they know? How would they ever guess at the racial component of an over-eager hispanic do-gooder killing an apprentice standard-issue Black thug?

I mean, sir, really....I really don’t understand...there isn’t even a white person involved?

Ah, my poor students.

  1. Jourdan, ask your students if they would go into the muslim neighborhoods, if those exist in Austria.

People in any nation that is homogenous in race and culture, as most European countries, or in which minorities are small enough in number to be a refreshing curiousity, simply cannot understand.

But ask people in those places, such as Denmark, France or Britain, who have foolishly invited a large number of those who are truly different in outlook or belief, and I am sure they will understand.

  2. No one with a choice wants their children "educated" in pass-'em-up, affirmative actions schools, riddled with thugs, drugs, crime, and filth. Not blacks, not whites, not browns, not purples. No one wants to live in a neighborhood with a crack house on every corner either. Does Holder lives in Washington Highland or Shipley Terrace or Congress Heights? Umm, no. I doubt it. It's not just Americans of Euro descent who flee the fruits of soul-sucking government largesse...it's anyone with a shred of dignity or common sense.

People (not just inner-city blacks) allowing themselves to be warehoused in public projects with a fistful of food coupons has set the social bedrock for a lot of our race problems. I'd like to see (who wouldn't?) a big chunk of that demographic quietly throw off the yoke, educate themselves, and participate in the American dream instead of dragging it down for everyone else. Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would ensue from the Reid/Pelosi/Frank contingent? Jackson and Sharpton would be out of a job, and good riddance. Ptooey!

IMHO, and listening to my friends and neighbors: decent, freedom-loving Americans of all colors are sick of the status quo, or should I say stagnant quo. Will there be enough of us to throw Obama and his socialist goons out on their ass in November, and will a change of leadership inspire dignity and personal responsibility in more of our citizens? I sure as hell hope so. I feel like we're down to the last straw.

I don't blame your students for being confused Jourdan. It's a mess. It's a mess we're not allowed to discuss, lest we be shouted down as "racist" and cold-hearted.

Oh, and Holder and his "nation of cowards" can KMA. In my little portion of heartland, we'll all stick together against the thugs and criminals, whether they be street gangs or politicians. We'll still measure each other by the content of our character, and not by the color of our skin. Yeah, I know it sounds corny and trite, but that's the way we roll. Neener neener neener on Eric The Incompetent and his homies, the NBPers.

Sorry for the long-winded comment. This stuff really gets my dander ruffled! I love your posts Jourdan, and I love to hear what you think and what everyone else here thinks.

And now I'll zip my lip. :D

    1. I could read your thoughts all day long, lady red. I'm so glad to be on this forum.

If (gawd forbid!) you get tired of nursing, I think you could easily have a lucrative career as a writer.

  3. What Lady Red said.

My son has no intention of raising his children (when he has them) in Seattle. He is sorry he grew up there. He is of the "give me 40 acres and a mule" school of thought, although he would buy and pay for his 40 aces and mule -- he does not expect anyone to give it to him.

And please, LR, don't zip your lip.
