Sweet Jane

I have been listening to an interesting series of BBC Radio 2 podcasts called Celluloid Jukebox.  In the series I am currently enjoying, the host details a history of 60 years of pop music in the movies.

I had quite forgotten how beautiful Margo Timmins voice is until the host played the Cowboy Junkies version of Sweet Jane which was featured on the soundtrack of Tarantino's Natural Born Killers.

And for you purists, here's a Lou Reed live version:

  1. And they say we have no overlap... 😍

For what it's worth, I think the Cowboy Junkies version is a purer expression of the song than Lou Reed's.

Similar to the way the several female torch remakes of the Stones' Wild Horses are superior to the original, IMO.

(Sucker for the whole female torch thing in general).

    1. I so love that you got it was you when I referenced "purists". I love even more your appreciation of torch singers.

Interestingly, I was listening to another BBC radio program yesterday that I am a fan of, Desert Island Discs. And one of the guests choices was the Stones' Wild Horses. I haven't heard that song for ages and I always loved it. You are right, the torch singers do it better than Mick.

  2. I prefer the Cowboy Junkies version, by a slight margin. But give the props to Lou Read for writing it.

I'm a fan of the "torch singer" genre as well, and a little enamored of this version of an old standby, sung on Britain's Got Talent, earlier this year:

    1. I went to your link Dances and adored her version of Funny Valentine. I was interested enough to do a bit of DuckDuckGoing, and discovered that the audition was from 2013 (rather than earlier this year). Plus she also auditioned for The Voice the same year. The two auditions are polar opposites of each other.

  4. There was briefly another live version of Sweet Jane on YouTube from a concert they did in Paris in 1993. It was an up-tempo version and went on for a while, Mo Tucker playing drums. It's awesome. Sadly, it got pulled from YouTube pretty quickly; happily, I downloaded it before that so I still have it. I can send you the file if you give me an email address.

    2. Got it! Thanks, it sounds so different. Almost like it's not the same song.
