Think Maybe?

  1. Good job on the cartoon Matt.

I'm praying that the terrorist massacre tonight is the straw that broke the camel's back.

  2. Excellent, Matt.

This is a sad, sad day. I'm praying for the same thing, Fay.

  3. Hollande is promising a "pitiless war".

One wonders whether the French state retains the capacity to wage such war.

  4. I am stunned, but not surprised. Six different locations? This is war (with only one side fighting!).I hope you're right Fay, but I have a feeling we're due for yet another round of appeasement.

Your cartoon is excellent Matt, and spot on. I feel sick.

    1. Of course FB is now showing those posts about how we should not jump to islamophobia etc. etc. etc.

Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

  5. Matt, I saw that FB post from our old friend. I ALMOST jumped all over it, but then decided it was a pointless waste of time.

    Lewy, PERFECT.

  6. I guess that's why I hardly ever visit my FB. Yes, that *is* absolutely perfect, lewy.

I am SICK TO DEATH of being told that we must avoid a backlash. That's really up to the "good" muslims, isn't it? We've bent over backwards for them, I've seen enough beheadings, stonings, rape, torture, bombings, threats, shootings, stabbings, burning alive, did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, there was once the crusades, we oughtn't get on our high horses.

Time for the "good" muslims to reform their religion.

    1. Yeah, the Crusades -- which were how many hundreds of years ago? And they were to take back lands that were taken by the Muslims?

    2. I don't feel sorry for any "refugees" who don't loudly and robustly condemn the actions of the caliphate savages. The hell with them!

The only regret I have about the Crusades is that we didn't manage to take more territory.

    3. After the little boy drowned "escaping from Syria" which brought about this whole fiasco, there was a big deal in the Vancouver news, including stories about memorial services in Vancouver. I wondered at the time why? No one else's little nephew had ever died in a tragedy? Why the big news story?

Now we know. And we will regret the day.

    4. I have thought several times tonight of that Mark Steyn video from Denmark that (I think?) lady red posted. How he drove home the response to the last terror attack at Charlie Hebdo. That it was Hollywood chic to hold up a pen, how Dame Helen Mirren even wore a jeweled pen at the Oscars to show her solidarity.

Yes, that all made a deep impact on the insane homicidal maniacs.

His words rang so true and are only proven more so tonight. Everyone needs to watch that and listen well. Like lewy said, we'll see what the French reaction will be. I was very surprised about the lack of reaction by Putin to the bombing of the Russian jet.

    5. I was very surprised about the lack of reaction by Putin to the bombing of the Russian jet.

Me too florrie. I think that there is MUCH more to that story. And it could be that Putin is working behind the scenes to exact his revenge. He's a ruthless SOB.

    6. I believe you're 100% correct about Putin, lady red.

I'm glad to have you folks to talk it out with. This day has been so horrible.

    7. I have a very bad feeling that there will be more horrible days in the near future. I foresee not only accelerated cowardly attacks from Islamic weenies, but also European nationalists rising up against their governments, especially the French and the Germans. Muslims and ethnic Europeans brawling in the streets would not surprise me in the least.

    8. lr, if the "extreme right" in the EU states does engage in some backlash, it will play into Merkel's hands.

Wretchard has a nice piece of at PJM. Claims this shows that "Europe" is a dead end.

      Au contraire.

The solution is "more Europe". It always is. The refugees will keep coming. And the clampdown on the "extreme right" will become very ruthless.

The EU will remain a democracy - because all the parties that threaten the elite will be banned!

And the "totalitarian" digital police state that the EU protested so endearingly by embracing Edward Snowden, will be implemented in its totality.

Banning encryption and censoring media will be very easy in the EU, no pesky 1st Amendment to worry about. The EU was always about a balance of rights and responsibilities; if people are being irresponsible they have no right to speak.

There might be some tactical retreats and holding actions so as not to overwhelm resources on the ground. But there will be no wholesale repudiation and rollback of the movement to "welcome" the "refugees". The European governing elites have too much staked on it.

Britain is the only wildcard in play.

    9. I don't know lewy. I'm thinking that ordinary citizens, angry and frightened, may swell the ranks of the nationalists, and the elites be damned. There has to be a backbone in there somewhere.

    10. lr, the "official talking points" are being formed even now.

Here's one you will be hearing: "ISIS attacked Europe because it is infuriated that Europe is so open and welcoming! We must defeat them by being even more open and welcoming! The militants are trying to destroy what they call the 'gray zone' - the status of being muslim in Europe, without being either a European or an extremist. We must protect the gray zone! Moar multiculturalism!"

Just heard the mayor of Paris spouting this.

Forget it, folks. There will be no awakening. Europe is finished.

    11. I don't think the "official talking points" will carry as much sway this time around. Even the talking heads at NBC are calling for the borders to be tightened up. However, they are also postulating that the attack was home-grown French (North Africans immigrants becoming embittered and radicalized).

      Crazy.

    12. lr, the people who run Europe - call them "ruling class" (Codevilla) or the elites or what have you - are multi-lingual, educated, intermarried, and all citizens of the EU/World rather than their home nations.

(Pretty much the way they were in the middle ages, as well - the Nobles were a different breed, literally).

Those people have no answer to the problem of Islamist terror.

But they have plenty of opportunity to use this to clamp down further on the media, clamp down further on politics, and generally cement their hold on power and Orwellize the notion of "Democracy" - which will be mean whatever they need it to mean.

It's just another notch of the boa constrictor.

If you're a pissed off European, who are you going to vote for? If they win, they'll be removed from the ballot or co-opted. (See e.g. the Marxist Nationalist Greek PM Tsipras, but the EU co-opted him.)

An national party in France or Germany which runs on the platform of closing borders and reversing immigration is not possible. They won't relinquish power.

The upheaval will have to be tremendous, an 1848 style uprising. That could happen but it's a ways off.

My guess is that the average European will either a) buy into the party line wholeheartedly (which a significant minority do in a very militant way of their own), or b) swallow their cognitive dissonance and try to get on as best they can.

  7. That image of the little boy lying dead on the beach will never leave my mind. Did you all know that story? The father was interviewed and in the first translation he said that after their boat went down he was holding onto the little boy, started to have trouble swimming so in his own words "tossed" the child to his wife who was trying to stay afloat with their other child. The three of them drowned. The father somehow lived. There were several other versions of the story after that.

If that's not the problem in a nutshell, I don't know what is.

    1. Ugh. I hadn't heard that version. Good lord. Odds are the kids and wives are a "cover" for the maniacs swarming into Europe...they're expendable. These guys don't value life; not theirs, not their children's.

    2. I believe the father was also the captain of the boat. As I mentioned, there was a big memorial service in Vancouver for the boy because a cousin lives there.

Frankly, I think his father and the father's friends were probably trying to decide on what color suicide belt to buy the boy then decided they boy could do a better job of breaking down western borders by drowning instead.

  8. I am not at all surprised at anything about these attacks except perhaps the timing. It would seem they might wait until there were more of them in Europe to assure that most of the blood spilled would be that of the ones they are coming to subjugate

    1. Dances, a couple thoughts on the timing:

      1) I do think they mean to keep their co-religionists "on side" as it were - the refugees have a choice; they can integrate or they can radicalize. The Europeans won't let them integrate, and if they do, they will become a target. So radicalize it is. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the non-violent Sunni who are fleeing honestly start out in search of a "better life" but become contemptuous, radicalized and violent when they've been in Europe for a while. It is true, the Germans and the French won't integrate them. They literally don't know how to assimilate people "America style" if they wanted to, and most don't. (Yes, Americans are busy unlearning how to integrate immigrants "America style", but that's another topic).

      2) ISIS is being hit hard right now by the Russians and the Kurds. (With, true enough, some tactical strikes by the US, and the recent entry of France into the coalition doing the strikes.) It must have been the case that these cells were in place for some time waiting for a "go" signal; ISIS figured now was a good time.

  10. I listened to John Kerry speaking officially this morning. He mouthed almost all the platitudes of Geneva 1954 vis a vis Indo-China...lofty goals, promises, etc. Vietnam was created and the terrorism grew, not shrunk...until the outbreak of pure war at the Battle of the I Drang Valley in 1967...the first regular army versus regular army battle in Vietnam,a formal affair (the book "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young"... by LTG Hal Moore is a good summary) and it blew the whole place up as many of us had the opportunity to learn back then. Lofty goals, promises, democracy, etc. in Geneva devolving to savagery in the I Drang and the years following when I had the "opportunity" to participate.

I've spent a good deal of time studying the Indo-China wars, back to 1066, because I thought knowledge might help us avoid a similar future vis a vis terrorism.

    I was wrong.

It is all happening again, just slightly different actors.

    1. Thanks, Florie...it was nice quiet day here and I'm quite happy enough for that...and doubly happy my daughter, who had gone to Europe for a large concert, returned home late 11/12 PM in time for me to not worry about her when Paris blew up. Her intended concert was Nickelback in Amsterdam, in a much larger venue than Ba'Talan (sic?), but was canceled due to illness or injury to one of the NB leads. Not sure the horror would have targeted Amsterdam, but grateful it couldn't and Kim is home safe and sound. Best birthday gift ever IMO.
