I'll Be Me

If you have Netflix, this movie is now available. I watched it the other night and bawled my eyes out. It's outstanding, especially if you're caring for, have lost, or know someone with Alzheimer's. Five stars. No, six!

These are the lyrics to Glen's last song, I'm Not Gonna Miss You

I'm still here, but yet I'm gone
I don't play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you 'til the end
You're the last person I will love
You're the last face I will recall
And best of all, I'm not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you
I'm never gonna hold you like I did
Or say I love you to the kids
You're never gonna see it in my eyes
It's not gonna hurt me when you cry
I'm never gonna know what you go through
All the things I say or do
All the hurt and all the pain
One thing selfishly remains
I'm not gonna miss you
I'm not gonna miss you
And the video:

  1. Glen co-wrote I'm Not Gonna Miss You with Julian Raymond.

There are no words. I'm stunned speechless.

  2. I watched it on Friday. Well worth viewing. What a lovely man he is and what a talented musician. I always loved his voice but never knew what a great guitar player he is.

    1. Yes, he can make his guitar smoke! I remember seeing him play (on TV) with another great, Roy Clark, back in the day.

I think I'll toodle over to YouTube and find some of Glen's guitar work to post. :)

    2. I always loved his voice but never knew what a great guitar player he is. I do still remember his tv show of the 70's, I was in high school, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Show or something like that. Yes, a very talented musician. I believe he played on the Smothers Brothers show as well (for those of you old enough to remember that...Steve Martin played on it as well).

    3. AND he played for the Beach Boys!

    4. You should see the film The Wrecking Crew, a film about LA's most famous group of studio musicians. It turns out that after 1964, studio musicians were used on most (all?) Beach Boy records. Glen Campbell was one of the Wrecking Crew. (Glen Campbell also played guitar on Strangers in the Night by Sinatra.)

The WC film is the best of that genre, slightly ahead of the Motown movie and much better than 20 Steps from Stardom (or whether that film was called).

    5. Tom told me about that film and I got the dvd for him when it was released (it came out this last July).

It is just as Matt said & well worth the $$.

  3. My dad's (and my) favorite of Glen's was "Wichita Lineman". The video of I'm Not Gonna Miss You brought tears to my eyes. Alzheimers is such a cruel disease, my dad died of multi-infarct dementia and it is very similar. It robs the person of self and of dignity. I don't know if I will be able to watch the movie; the last one I saw about Alzheimer's was the one with Julie Christie. It was such a progressive pile of steaming crap that I swore I'd never watch another one. But I'm sure Glen's movie would be a HUGE improvement. It's just the subject matter that's so depressing. I mean, I LOVED Leaving Las Vegas but I can't bear to watch it again.

    1. It's a difficult movie to watch. I considered showing it to my mom, but I think it would be too emotional for her. If I cried all the way through it, she'd be a wreck. Maybe someday. Not today, not this week.

  4. Mark Steyn has an interesting read on the recording of Strangers in his "Sinatra Century" series, which I seem unable to link to, but you can find easily by going to Stey Online and clicking through the story on the top left corner then scrolling down
