Everest

This is one of the movies I'm looking forward to seeing in the theater. We only seem to get to a couple a year; that's because so few new films look interesting to us and also partially due to some lefty actor saying outrageous and/or idiotic things. Either way, we wait for something special and Everest looks to be one of those.

Having read Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air a couple times - and late mountaineer Scott Fischer being from our area - I'm familiar with the story. It's a riveting book that I would highly recommend (despite the fact that I thought the author was personally a self-absorbed douche).

Here is a link to Mt. Everest from the ground up. Use your mouse to see the incredible panoramic view from the summit.

Now if only Peter Jackson would finish and release The Hobbit Trilogy...Extended Edition...in Blu-ray...by Christmas...I'd be a happy camper!

  1. I remember reading several in depth articles on this soon after the events. I was completely horrified and had nightmares. I don't think I'll be watching this. I know how it ends.

We have an interesting planet. Turns out there is an often overlooked way into space. Turns out you can walk there!

But it's not a good idea. Not smart to walk up into space. It's not how we're supposed to get there. God gave us rockets for a reason!

  2. I've read the book multiple times too over the years. Krakauer is a skilled storyteller. Nightmares? Yes.

Let us know about the movie! I seldom go to the theater, but I might make an exception for this one. :)

  4. Oh gosh, you're working nights, lady red? Be safe, hope the schedule isn't keeping you from getting sleep. Dang.

Yes, despite my personal feelings about JK, he is a wonderful storyteller, I think I've read (and enjoyed) all his books. Did you read "Into the Wild"?

    1. Yes! "Into The Wild" was a wonderful book. I cried like a baby!

I'm doing pediatric nursing at night so I can have my days free to take the folks to doctor appointments and such. It works out well. :)

  5. The panoramic view link is incredible florrie! I would never make that climb. I'm not a fan of steep inclines and freezing wind, but it certainly is beautiful.

  6. I thought you'd enjoy it, lady red! Tom sent that to me and I loved it so I put the rest of the thread around it.

Like you, I would never have attempted that climb when I was young. The Khumbu icefall is the most terrifying thing to me, walking a tightrope over ice caverns on a little aluminum ladder with those crampons? It makes me nervous just thinking about it.
