    1. um, it's a she. :|

Neither Marrissa Paternoster nor the original artist* were models of feminine charm.

*[Patti Smith - you had me doubting for a second, but no, not Grace Slick. S'ok, flo, bonghits are legal in Wa now... ;) ]

  4. Their style immediately reminded me of Jefferson Airplane, you're too young to remember them, lewy.

Well, I just looked her up, I did think that was a boy! I think she strives for the androgynous look.

  5. Oh, I missed this one. I did not see it hiding under Otis!.

I played the Patti Smith version on the radio back in the day. 10,000 Maniacs had a version in the early '90's. Good tune.

I notice the blond was singing into a ribbon microphone, whereas the dark haired girl was singing into a Dynamic microphone (a Shure SM7). The ribbon would have a better high end and cleaner sound, although the SM7 is no slouch. I think they wanted the dark haired girl's voice to sound "smokier," if you hear the difference.

    1. Oops, not ribbon microphone. I meant to say condenser microphone.

    2. Matt, glad you liked it!

The blond (crazy ginger Scott, actually) is Shirley Manson of Garbage. She doesn't need more "smoke" because she actually smokes (or did). The dark haired girl (Marrissa Paternoster of Screaming Females) is younger and I don't think she smokes.

I remember an interview with Aimee Mann of Till Tuesday in the '90s saying her sound engineer had an easier time with the EQ when she was smoking. Sad but true.
