Lana Del Rey - Shades of Cool

So timeless. So lush. So feminine. So wrong.

So very, very wrong.

But so cool.

  1. That was really weird. The music, the lyrics, the video...all of it. I've not heard of her before, so I looked at her wiki. Weirdness there too.

I can see that she might be a hit with the menfolk though. Heh heh!

    1. I think it was cool of Ari to appear in that video with Lana!

      :P

[I have more wit than sense, obviously...]

  2. Why is it "So very, very wrong" lewy?

I read the comments on You Tube and the video is supposed to represent the old guys gf from when he was young, she died and he has been haunted by her ever since. The guy who plays the old guy is her real life "tattoo artist". No comment...

    1. Fay, cool - that's an interesting interpretation - I went through the comments and I agree that it fits with some of the visuals. I don't see how it fits with the lyrics though. Maybe he kept the same car since the sixties...

Absent the ghost/flashback angle, though, a girl that young with a creepy dude that old... omg. Wrong.

She's crazy in love. Emphasis on crazy. Not to mention too drunk / stoned to stand in the last scenes.

And yet... love is a two sided coin. Pleasure and pain. Delirium and madness. Never one without the other. I get that. The perspective of the video is, I think, a feminine one, despite the obvious invitation of the "male gaze" that lady red alludes to. She's communicating a rich emotion, an alluring one. Filled with languid passion. And danger.

My wife watched the video and 45 seconds in said She needs to do a Bond movie theme song.

From your lips to Hugh Hefner's ears. G-d willing.

  3. "She needs to do a Bond movie theme song." a lot of the You Tube comments said there was a strong Bond feel at the beginning of the song.

  4. Moar Straing.

Well I'm glad some have found her interesting, at least. I like that she's different; she's not following the typical female pop singer formula.

And she's got an eye and an ear for the eras she embeds her work in; even her sex appeal is vintage. Again, a nice break from the current pop milieu, which seems to be converging with porn.

  5. I believe in the country America used to be.
I believe in the person I want to become.
I believe in the freedom of the open road.
And my motto is the same as ever:
"I believe in the kindness of strangers. And when I’m at war with myself I ride, I just ride."
    Who are you?
Are you in touch with all of your darkest fantasies?
Have you created a life for yourself where you can experience them?
    I have. I am f*****g crazy.
    But I am free.

I'm going out on a limb here and proclaim this to be effing brilliant.

(Reasonable people may differ, of course.)

This too is an authentically American dream. Not everything authentically American is white picket fences and two kids in the yard. No corner of Liberty is without some darkness along with the light.

I'm well aware of the problematic nature of her work - and there are myriad problematic aspects - but she strikes me as a sincere and brave artist, and her art speaks to me.
