"You Are Not Special"

The no-nonsense David McCullough Jr told Wellesley High School's "pampered" and "bubble-wrapped" class of 2012 that they were "not exceptional" at a graduation ceremony last weekend, the NY Daily News reports. "Capable adults with other things to do have held you, kissed you, fed you, wiped your mouth, wiped your bottom, trained you, taught you, tutored you, coached you, listened to you, counselled you, encouraged you, consoled you and encouraged you again," Mr McCullough said. "But do not get the idea you're anything special. Because you're not."
Excellent!

  2. "The universe has no center, so you can't be it." Love it.

"We have come to love accolades more than achievement." Right on.

  3. Gawd, it's a wonder I ever survived.

My father died when I was six. No one called a Counsellor.

I got a "C+" in Math in my second year of Secondary (High) School. No one tutored me.

I was "bullied" mercilessly about my "big and crooked" nose. No one wore a pink shirt for me.

I never "Graduated" (no such thing in England).

I never went to a "Prom" (again, no such thing in England).

I never went "trick or treating." (Begging for sweets? How crass, but again, not British eh)

I also have never been unemployed, or on welfare, or depended on anyone..for anything. I work and pay my taxes.

I seem to be in the minority but that's fine with me. I plan to continue.

  4. I'll bet the spoiled darlings were shocked. SHOCKED. Their parents probably fainted dead away, aghast and horrified.

I love it! This guy should get a medal, or at least a cold beer.
